Dr. Alex McFarland Asks: How Has the World Changed Since September 11, 2001?
Would Americans Extend a Helping Hand as They Did on That Tragic Day?
CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Each September 11, the nation looks back on a tragic day in history—a day with so much sadness, shock and fear, but also one that showed the resolve and unifying spirit of America.
But, asks author, religion and culture expert, and national radio host Dr. Alex McFarland (www.AlexMcFarland.com): How much has changed in our world since September 11, 2001?
“The world is a much different place than 16 years ago,” McFarland said. “Unfortunately, there seems to be even more hatred toward America—and, sadder still—within America. There are still many who want to harm and kill Americans and destroy our society and our ideals, replacing freedom with fear. And this is not reserved for those outside our country. We have developed an increasingly hostile attitude toward each other, because of a variety of reasons, such as where we stand politically, what we believe about sexuality, how we view gender, and even our goals economically.
“September 11 was a tragic day and a black mark on our history,” McFarland added. “But many uplifting images and stories came from that day—people helping other people, rescuing others, extending a hand regardless of color or creed, background or belief. The American spirit shone through during a terrible time. I wonder if the same spirit would show itself today. Would we have the same compassion for a stranger who believes differently than we do? If ever there was a time to unite and mirror the America we were years ago, it is now. Division in America is killing that American spirit, and only the saving redemption of Jesus Christ will ever revive it.”
At the same time, however, McFarland holds true to the fact that Christians must stand for their beliefs in every aspect of life. He recently debuted his newest book, co-authored with apologist and evangelist Jason Jimenez, called “Stand Strong in Your Faith: Live What You Believe with Confidence and Passion.” The guide provides Christians with insight and encouragement to keep the faith during the toughest times of life. “Stand Strong in Your Faith,” released earlier this summer, is available from AlexMcFarland.com.
In another of his new books, “Abandoned Faith: Why Millennials Are Walking Away and How You Can Lead Them Home,” also co-authored with Jimenez, McFarland explores why millennials are leaving the church, instructs how those who love millennials can bring them back, and offers the hope of Christ to parents, especially as they seek to understand what propels their adult children as they begin to come into their own.
