Erwin Lutzer of Moody Church Addresses God’s Holiness in New Film ‘The God Who Speaks’

Movie’s Director M.D. Perkins: Christians Must Have Confidence in This Holiness or They Will Lose Confidence in the Bible

TUPELO, Miss.—“What is God like?”

That is one of the questions that exists in many people’s minds, says Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, pastor emeritus of The Moody Church and one of the contributing biblical scholars featured in the new American Family Studios feature-length film The God Who Speaks.

A division of the American Family Association (AFA), American Family Studios explores the truth and authority of the Bible in this powerful 90-minute documentary. Available now on DVD and digital rental, the movie also features some of the world’s most respected defenders of the Christian faith.

Lutzer adds that, besides God’s personality, people also wonder: Are there many gods or is there one God?

“Of course, left on our own, all of these are mysteries,” he says in the film. “What you have at (Mount) Sinai is very remarkable. You find, for example, that the people were to stand back. God said, ‘Stand back!’ No animal was even to touch the mountain. If an animal touched the mountain, it was to be put to death, but not directly with the human hand. It was to be shot with an arrow because God says, ‘I’m coming—stand back! Get out of the way!’ What God was revealing there was His holiness. So when we think of the Ten Commandments, they were not simply given for a point in time. They really are omnitemporal, by that I mean they exist as the basic law of God throughout all eras. And God is really saying in the Ten Commandments, ‘This is what I’m like.’”

M.D. Perkins, the film’s director, says that the biblical experts like Lutzer help Christians realize they must be confident in the holiness of God.

“Some in the church have lost confidence in the Bible because they have lost confidence in God,” Perkins said. “There are attacks from liberal theologians and attacks from skeptics—and those things are legitimately wearying and have done damage to the church. But underneath the church’s departure is a heart issue. Do we truly cherish Christ or do we love ourselves? Do we say, like the apostles, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of life!’ (John 6:68)? It’s no secret that the evangelical church has enjoyed many privileges in America. But in our privilege, we have become complacent in many ways, enjoying God’s blessings of financial prosperity, religious liberty and a general cultural acceptance of Christian values and moral standards.”

Dr. Erwin Lutzer served as the senior pastor for 36 years. A clear expositor of the Bible, he is the featured speaker on three radio programs that are heard on more than 1,000 outlets in the United States and around the world: “Running to Win”—a daily Bible-teaching broadcast; “Moody Church Hour”—The Moody Church’s Sunday morning worship service; and “Songs in the Night”—an evening program that has been airing since 1943.

Lutzer is also an award-winning author of numerous books including: “Rescuing the Gospel,” “He Will Be the Preacher,” “The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent,” “One Minute After You Die,” “When a Nation Forgets God” and Christian Bookseller’s Gold Medallion Award winner, “Hitler’s Cross.” His speaking engagements include Bible conferences and seminars, both domestically and internationally, including: Russia, the Republic of Belarus, Germany, Scotland, Guatemala and Japan. He also leads tours to Israel and the cities of the Protestant Reformation in Europe. Dr. Lutzer and his wife, Rebecca, live in the Chicago area. They have three grown children and eight grandchildren.

Since its debut, “The God Who Speaks” has enabled thousands of Christians to better defend their faith, talk to skeptics about the truth of the Bible and rest assured in the authority of God’s Word. “The God Who Speaks,” also produced by Jeff Chamblee, was recently named Best Documentary at the Christian Worldview Film Festival.
