February 24, 2020
KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The sports world was shocked on Jan. 26 when former NBA standout Kobe Bryant was killed with eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in a tragic helicopter crash in California.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA, www.fca.org), whose vision is to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes, released the following statement today.
“Our hearts grieve for the families, teammates and fans of Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant, Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Christina Mauser and Ara Zobayan,” said FCA President and CEO Shane Williamson. “The tragedy of Jan. 26 has impacted not only the sports world, but all those who lost their loved ones. Our FCA family joins with many others in praying for all who have been affected by their passing. Psalm 34:18 reminds that ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit’ (NIV).”
The Bryants’ memorial services are planned for 10 a.m. PT Feb. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
