Fellowship of Christian Athletes Ski Camp Opens New Doors to Reach Coaches and Athletes

Said 11-Year-Old Skier Yunho, ‘I Have Learned What It Means to Love God 100% Through the Huddles at Camp’

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Today, travel to Asia may be limited, but in January, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA, www.fca.org) hosted its first overnight ski camp in Korea to impact coaches and athletes in the winter sports world.

The three-day FCA Korea event was a huge success, as 16 ski campers were trained physically, emotionally and, most importantly, spiritually under FCA’s 2020 ministry theme of 100%, gleaned from the Bible verse Mark 12:30: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (NIV).

“FCA International is extremely grateful for this first step into the winter sports world, and we are thrilled to be able to impact more Korean athletes and coaches who participate in winter sports,” said FCA Chief Field Officer Dan Britton. “We are so excited to witness where God will take us next so we can see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.”

The skiers in Korea experienced four training sessions, plus one special training session led by Coach Kim, a former Korean national representative skier. Kim shared her testimony to encourage and strengthen campers’ faith in Christ, as they enjoyed learning new skills as well as how much Jesus loves them.

For instance, said one 11-year-old ski camper named Yunho, “I have learned what it means to love God 100% through the Huddles at Camp.”

The ski camp strengthened the relationship between FCA and Coach Kim, as participants learned about her passion to share the Gospel with others. FCA Korea and Onnuri Community Church planned and worked together to host the camp through a mutual partnership established last summer. With a vision to better serve coaches and athletes in Korea and to advance God’s Kingdom, the two organizations locked arms for the inaugural project.

FCA International continues to make a worldwide impact, now working in 93 countries across the globe—up from 84 countries in 2018. In 2019, FCA worked through 298 international leaders reaching 29,852 coaches and athletes by hosting 345 Camps internationally. FCA International’s Huddle program also expanded from 1,775 to 1,913 groups, reaching 39,768 attendees in their communities.

Specifically in Korea, FCA has also reached coaches and athletes in additional ways, such as through a past Fields of Faith gathering at Korea International School, where a small but mighty gathering prayed together, worshipped and encouraged one another as they sought to grow in their faith in Jesus Christ.

FCA Camps and ministries for coaches and athletes are integral avenues for FCA International, which works with local sports ministry leaders and existing ministries throughout the East Asia Global Region. The impact is expanding throughout the region, with leaders working in 12 countries and many additional partners in surrounding nations.

Also in East Asia, FCA leaders are intentional in training sports leaders to establish ministry in their countries. The 3Dimensional Coaching program is also growing internationally, and more coaches around the world are meeting together in Coaches Huddles to study and pray together, and read the Word of God, oftentimes through the FCA Sports Bible Handbook in Korean.
