Josh McDowell Shares Evidence for Christianity in New Film ‘The God Who Speaks’
American Family Association Movie Shares the Expertise of Many Who Help Reveal the Truth of the Bible’s Authority
TUPELO, Miss.—In a new commentary for Fox News, author, apologist and legendary speaker Josh McDowell shares that evidence for Christianity is like a “tsunami.”
It’s this authority and power in the truth of God’s Word that has kept McDowell going strong in ministry for a half-century.
McDowell is one of the contributing biblical scholars featured in the new American Family Studios feature-length film “The God Who Speaks.” A division of the American Family Association (AFA), American Family Studios explores the truth and authority of the Bible in this powerful 90-minute documentary. Available now on DVD and digital rental, the movie features McDowell as a contributor, as well as some of the world’s most respected defenders of the Christian faith.
In his Fox News op-ed, McDowell writes that several instances in his childhood led him to “despise God, religion and anything to do with the church.”
“I was the last person in the world who you would expect to become a Christian,” he said.
But when he was challenged by some young believers to investigate the evidence for Christianity intellectually—specifically, evidence of the resurrection—he was ready to prove them wrong. He left his university and traveled across the United States, Europe and the Middle East to study ancient manuscripts and gather the evidence against Christianity.
“After months of study,” McDowell recalled, “I returned to a small library in England. I leaned back in my chair, cupped my hands on the back of my head and said ‘It’s true. It really is true.’ The evidence for Christianity was stronger than all the years of my pain and skepticism that kept me from believing it. I knew that if I was going to be honest, I could not remain a skeptic.
“The historical evidence for Christianity today is like a tsunami,” McDowell continued. “And yet, the amount of evidence we have engulfs the kind that led me to believe in Christ over five decades ago. The textual, archaeological and manuscript evidence is increasing regularly.”
McDowell shares some of this insight in “The God Who Speaks,” helping other Christians to rest assured in the Bible’s authority and to challenge them to know all they can about God’s Word so they may lead others to Christ.
Josh McDowell has been at the forefront of cultural trends and groundbreaking ministry for more than 50 years. His ministry serves and equips the body of Christ in raising generations of purpose-driven Christians who know what they believe, why it is true and how to live it out.
A trailblazer for truth and relationships, McDowell shares the essentials of the Christian faith in everyday language so that youth, families, churches, leaders and individuals of all ages are prepared for the life of faith and the work of the ministry. Since 1961, McDowell has delivered more than 27,000 talks to over 25 million people in 125 countries. He has written or co-authored 148 books, including “More Than a Carpenter” (27 million copies have been distributed) and “New Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” recognized by World Magazine as one of the top 40 books of the 20th century and one of the 13 most influential books of the last 50 years on Christian thought. Now with an updated version, the original “Evidence That Demands a Verdict” has been printed over 4 million times in 44 languages.
In 1961, McDowell joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ International. Not long after, he started the Josh McDowell Ministry to reach young people worldwide with the truth and love of Jesus. As he traveled to other countries, he saw that where people were sick, homeless and hungry—words were not enough. In 1991, he founded Operation Carelift to meet the physical and spiritual needs he discovered in orphanages, hospitals, schools and prisons in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Since that time, Operation Carelift has delivered humanitarian aid (food, clothing and medical supplies) worth more than $46 million. Nearly 1 million children have received school supplies, food items, hygiene items and toys.
Here at home, McDowell and his team have created many cutting-edge, live events to help young people stand strong and firm in their faith in the face of a rapidly changing culture. These have often developed into full-blown campaigns, such as: Six Hours with Josh, Why Wait?, Counter the Culture, Right From Wrong and True Foundations.
In spite of all the honors and awards he has received, McDowell will tell anyone that his greatest joys and pleasures come from his family. He and his wife, Dottie, have been married 46 years. They have four children and 10 grandchildren.
Since its Feb. 1 debut, “The God Who Speaks” has been enabling thousands of Christians to better defend their faith, talk to skeptics about the truth of the Bible and rest assured in the authority of God’s Word. “The God Who Speaks,” directed by M.D. Perkins and produced by Jeff Chamblee, was also recently named Best Documentary at the Christian Worldview Film Festival.
