Open Enrollment Provides an Opportunity to Trust God for Your Health Care

Samaritan Ministries Offers a Simple, Non-Insurance, Direct-Sharing Approach Where Members Bear One Another’s Burdens

PEORIA, Ill.—Marian from North Carolina faced increasing insurance premiums that exceeded her salary. She needed a way to manage her health care costs, but wanted to help her fellow Christians as well.

Joining with the members of Samaritan Ministries International (samaritanministries.org) allowed her to do both.

As many like Marian make important decisions about their health care, especially before the open enrollment deadline of Jan. 31 for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, Samaritan Ministries provides its members with the refreshing opportunity to apply the principles of New Testament living to 21st-century health care.

Today, more than 64,000 member households (214,000 individuals) worldwide send a monthly financial share directly to other member households who have medical needs. Samaritan members also pray for one another and include notes and cards of encouragement and comfort. In this simple way, they are currently sharing more than $23 million each month, yet the monthly share has never exceeded $495 for a family of any size, and is even less for couples and singles.

Samaritan Ministries has practiced health care sharing through a Biblical lens for 22 years, with a focus on Christians helping other Christians with their needs as the Bible instructs in Galatians 6:2, which says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (ESV).

Marian’s feedback is like many others who have discovered that health care can be Biblical as well as affordable.

“I joined Samaritan Ministries several years ago,” she wrote. “I have not had to submit a need but have been blessed to help others each month with my share, and still have enough left for housing and food. Samaritan Ministries was an answer to prayer. Phil. 4:19—‘But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’”

Besides allowing members to obey God’s word and find a health care solution that fits within a family’s budget, those who are a part of health care sharing ministries like Samaritan are exempt from the Affordable Care Act health insurance mandate, and they do not share in needs for unbiblical practices, such as abortion.

Wrote another Samaritan member, Rebecca from Texas, “Our family has been a part of Samaritan for two years. In that time, we have had several needs–a poisonous snake bite, skin cancer, kidney stones, and a new baby. The team at Samaritan has been amazing. They are so wonderful when you call in. They offer prayer and support. I love that our entire family can be involved and praying for the families that we are sending to. So thankful to be part of this ministry.”
