Samaritan Ministries Named ‘Best Christian Workplace’ for 11th Consecutive Year

350+ Staff at Samaritan Ministries Help More Than a Quarter of a Million Members Honor God with Their Health Care

PEORIA, Ill.—For the 11th consecutive year, Samaritan Ministries International (samaritanministries.org), one of the largest health care sharing ministries in America, has been certified as a “Best Christian Workplace” by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute (BCWI).

BCWI, a pioneer in equipping and inspiring Christian leaders to build flourishing organizational cultures in their ministries, recently recognized Samaritan Ministries as a Certified Best Christian Workplace based on confidential responses to surveys of staff members.

Now in its 25th year, the rapidly growing Samaritan Ministries team of more than 350 staffers, based in Peoria, Illinois, serves more than 81,000 member households (267,000-plus individuals) that honor God with their health care. Each month, these members share more than $28 million in medical needs as they send financial shares directly to other members, along with prayer and encouraging notes and cards.

“Samaritan staff members have the uplifting and gratifying job of helping our tens of thousands of households honor God with their health care, while connecting with their brothers and sisters in Christ,” said Anthony Hopp, Samaritan’s vice president of external relations. “Our team has the privilege of being Christ’s hands and feet, assisting in the practice of Biblical community and bearing one another’s burdens, as Galatians 6:2 instructs. These remain as our core values and part of the unwavering mission of Samaritan, even as the health care landscape changes almost daily. In this important task, we can bring glory to God.”

Greg, a Samaritan staff member for three years, says he “loves” working at Samaritan.

“I have never, in 26 years of being in the workforce, experienced such a place as Samaritan,” Greg says. “Not only is working at Samaritan fulfilling, but there is also a strong belief in work/life balance. My marriage and family have experienced such a healing shift in who and how I am at home since I have become a Samaritan staffer.”

Staff members also find working at Samaritan spiritually fulfilling.

“I love being able to minister to members in the midst of major problems,” said Dave, who works in Member Services. “They need to know the comfort of our loving God and Father. There are so many hurting members who need to know that God is there in the midst of the pain and that He will take what the enemy meant for evil and turn it for good in their life.”

Beverly, a Samaritan member from New Hampshire, has witnessed how Samaritan staff members truly love their calling.

“Samaritan Ministries’ phone representatives are ALWAYS so thoughtful and helpful, patient and understanding,” she said. “The few times I’ve called, I have been touched by the content of the prayers the representatives share with me at the end of our calls, as they actually listened to what I said, and they instinctively know what I really need from God. Most of the notes that I have received with my need were heartfelt and appreciated. I’ve passed the word on to a lot of people!”

According to a congratulatory letter from BCWI to Samaritan, “Here at Best Christian Workplaces Institute, we believe that Christian workplaces should set the standard as the best, most effective places to work in the world. We know that achieving this standard involves proactive planning and hard work to attain a healthy workplace culture. Colleagues and employees desire authenticity, accountability, collaboration and innovation from each other and from their leaders. We recognize today that your leadership demonstrates Christ-centered servant leadership (Mark 10:42-45), and we stand with you in your commitment to be a flourishing organization, knowing that you are Christ’s hands, feet and witness to your employees and to those you serve through your organization.”

Certified status is based on the eight key benchmarks of BCWI’s “FLOURISH Model”—Fantastic teams, Life-giving work, Outstanding talent, Uplifting growth, Rewarding compensation, Inspirational leadership, Sustainable strategy and Healthy communication. Developed in 2002, the survey has been completed by more than 300,000 employees from 925 organizations, churches and Christian-owned businesses in the U.S., Australia, Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe and Central America.

Categories of Best Christian Workplaces include Camps and Conference Centers, Christian-Owned Businesses, Christian Schools, Churches, Higher Education, Media, Parachurch & Missions, and Products & Services.

Samaritan Ministries’ hundreds of thousands of members overwhelmingly say they are “happily uninsured” and plan to stay that way. They appreciate that health care sharing through Samaritan has provided an affordable, Biblical and transparent model of health care, as well as a way for them to pray for and send monthly financial shares directly to their fellow members and bless them with encouraging personal notes and cards.

Each month, Samaritan’s growing Biblical community shares approximately $28 million in medical needs person to person, yet the monthly share has never exceeded $495 for a family of any size and is even less for two-person and single-person households. This direct-sharing approach also allows members to not only help fellow believers with their medical financial needs, but also to connect monthly through prayer, personal notes and cards of encouragement.
