Sign Declares That ‘Black Folks Need to Stay Out of White Churches’—Alex McFarland Reminds That All Christians Must Love Like Jesus

Dr. McFarland: The Church Must Get Serious About Condemning Racism

GREENSBORO, N.C.—A new church sign in Birmingham, Alabama, is causing a heated debate on race in the nation’s churches.

According to Fox 29 and other outlets, a white mega-church plans to open a branch in one of Birmingham’s poorer neighborhoods, and a black pastor there is not amused.

On a sign outside his own church, the pastor at New Era Baptist Church proclaimed, “Black folks need to stay out of white churches,” and on the flipside of the sign, “White folks refused to be our neighbors.”

Religion and culture expert, national radio host and author Dr. Alex McFarland says it is the church’s job to bring together Christians, no matter their color, rather than tear them apart.

“At a time when racism is at such a pernicious time in our culture, only Christianity has the answer to racism,” said McFarland, who is also Director for Christian Worldview and Apologetics at the Christian Worldview Center of North Greenville University (NGU) in Greenville, South Carolina. “There are no races, there is one race—the human race. All beings are made in the image of God and equally loved by Jesus. If the church would lead out in loving people unconditionally, regardless of how much melanin is in their skin pigmentation, and if the church would love the way Jesus does, the world would be a much better place. Let it be known that most Christians are, or should be, serious about condemning racism.”

Fox further reported that the controversy was sparked by the decision by the 40,000-member Church of the Highlands to hire a black pastor and create a branch in a high-crime neighborhood. The Birmingham mayor has also weighed in on the signage, stating that the spirit of racism and division in the city must end. “We have to change the conversation,” the mayor said.
