The State of the Culture: ‘We Berate That Which Is Natural and Are Forced to Tolerate the Unnatural,’ Says Evangelist Alex McFarland
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Political parties continue to squabble over the State of the Union Address, but what about the “State of the Culture?”
Religion and culture expert, national radio host and author Dr. Alex McFarland points to a few examples that lend some insight:
- Gillette calls out “toxic masculinity” in an ad that has made many men feel rebuked and criticized. While bullying kids and disrespecting women have no place, neither does shifting all the blame to half the world’s population.
Alex McFarland: “Society has been trying to emasculate men since the 1970s, and that experiment has failed miserably.”
- New York passes a law that allows women to abort their babies up to the day of birth. The move was made on the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the Empire State Building was lit in pink to “celebrate” this “fundamental right.”
Alex McFarland: “The very first God-given right outlined in our Declaration of Independence is the right to life. For 46 years, the United States has legally denied this right to millions of unborn babies. And by doing so, our nation has also denied these babies every other right Americans enjoy—they have no liberty, no opportunity to pursue happiness. A nation that counts life cheap is not a nation of liberty, opportunity or justice for all, and we deceive ourselves to think differently.”
- Actress Kate Hudson has vowed to raise her child “genderless”—and she’s not the first. “I think you just raise your kids individually regardless—like a genderless [approach],” said the daughter of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. “We still don’t know what she’s going to identify as.”
Alex McFarland: “Why are we being forced to accept gender fluidity, which we don’t fully know about, while we are forced not to accept objectivity when it comes to gender, which we do know about? Gender is objective, not subjective.”
These are just a few examples that point to a disturbing reality—that reality, in fact, has taken a back seat.
“We berate that which is natural, such as biblical marriage, the sanctity of life and personhood in how God created us, and are forced to tolerate the unnatural,” McFarland said. “We are in a hyper-tolerant culture, and today, we can say very little without being accused of shaming people. But when people are natural in who God created them to be, it’s OK to reprimand and rebuke them. And everything that is unnatural has to be tolerated and even celebrated. But that which is natural, good, true, real and pure—with nothing dark or salacious about it—is berated, and that which is evil and abhorrent is celebrated. We’re living in a state of unreality. I used to say this will be our undoing. But now, we are watching it be our undoing.”
McFarland also said that because of this cultural crumbling, people feel lost, unconnected and discouraged.
“There are a lot of no-win situations in our culture,” McFarland said. “In fact, our world is becoming a no-win situation. If you feel that you are in a no-win situation, turn to the One who can solve everything. The biggest no-win situation in history was sin and death, and Jesus beat it. Everything we want—a clean slate, to be straight with God, to reunite with our loved ones someday, to have peace with each other and peace with oneself—everything the human heart longs for, Jesus offers. He solves the insoluble.”
The author of 18 books with another on the horizon, McFarland is the creator of the successful Truth for a New Generation (TNG) national and regional apologetics conferences which have been in existence for over two decades and aim to help students, parents, youth pastors and community members to lift up this young generation, pray for them and empower them to stand strong in their faith.
