The Tide® Global Radio Ministry Returns to Where It All Began 73 Years Ago
The Tide Ministry Founder Charlie Byers First Recorded Gospel Radio Programming at Roxbury Holiness Camp on Aug. 11, 1946
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.—This week, The Tide® (www.thetide.org) global radio ministry is returning to where it all began.
As part of Missions Day Aug. 7 at Roxbury Holiness Camp, The Tide ministry will share more about its work for the past 73 years of recording and broadcasting Gospel radio programming—in the languages people were born to speak.
The Roxbury Camp runs through Sunday, Aug. 11, and the week is significant for The Tide ministry, as Aug. 11 was the day The Tide ministry founder Charlie Byers first broadcast Gospel radio programming in 1946.
“Not only is this week a special commemoration for The Tide ministry, but Roxbury Holiness Camp is also a special location,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “For many years, our founder Charlie Byers was also the director of the annual holiness camp meeting, and in the early years on Sunday during camp, listeners would tune in to his program, ‘The Gospel Tide Hour,’ at 7 o’clock in the morning to hear the word of God through the camp’s loudspeaker system. Few would guess that Charlie’s first broadcast would eventually grow to reach millions of people across three continents in 25 languages. But God knew! It is always so humbling to return to the time and place where God’s plans were laid for The Tide global Gospel radio ministry.”
Roxbury Holiness Camp festivities continue all this week at its longtime location of 13763 Cumberland Highway in Orrstown, Pa.
The Tide ministry currently offers audio programming in 25 heart languages spoken by millions of people in multiple regions of Albania, Bhutan, India, Kosovo, Nepal, Nigeria, Thailand and Zimbabwe, making it possible for multiple people groups to hear the Gospel in the languages they were born to speak.
