The Tide Ministry’s ‘Sponsor a Radio’ Program Has Allowed Potential Believers in India to Hear the Gospel for the Past 40 Years

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.—People are not saved when we preach salvation, but are saved when they respond in faith to what they hear about Jesus Christ. The Tide® ( global radio ministry focuses on making the Word of Christ available for all to hear.

And The Tide ministry does not overlook the fact that many in India may not hear the Gospel for one simple fact—they don’t have radios.

“The Tide ministry has been sharing the Gospel in India for 40 years, and we continue to hear from new believers,” said Don Shenk, director of The Tide ministry. “One listener in India said he saw several village people sitting around a radio, so he went and joined them. He wrote to us, ‘I heard about Jesus the Lord for the first time in my own language through the radio program, and liked it very much. I had never heard about the Lord through radio. Now I believe in the Lord. Please help me to grow spiritually.’ We praise God for these changed lives, and for those who gave so that this radio could be placed in this village so all could hear the Gospel.”

Since its inception, The Tide ministry has maintained a strong focus on broadcasting the Good News of Jesus Christ. The ministry, however, has become increasingly aware that the lack of a $40 radio stands between many souls in India and the saving grace of Christ’s love.

The Tide ministry often shares the story of one young girl in India who was visiting her uncle. During that visit, she had the opportunity to listen to his radio, heard The Tide ministry’s Hindi program and was touched by the message. After returning home, she wrote to The Tide ministry to request more information about Christianity and mentioned in her letter that although she enjoyed the program, she could not listen to it at home because her family did not have a radio.

“A generous gift from a friend of our ministry allowed us to provide this young girl and her family with a radio,” Shenk said. “The girl wrote again to express her gratitude for the gift and to let us know that since receiving the radio, her whole family has been listening to our program and now they have all accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior! This girl and her family may never have known salvation if they had not been provided with a radio.”

This is just one story about people who almost missed hearing about Jesus Christ, all for lack of a radio—something that is often taken for granted by many Americans. The Tide ministry’s “Sponsor a Radio” program allows those who give a gift of $40 to provide a family, or even an entire village, with a radio so that many can be reached by the Gospel. Through this simple gift, a radio can be placed in the hands of poverty-stricken people in India who desperately need to hear of God’s love for them.

For 70 years, The Tide radio programs have been changing lives by telling people about Jesus in the language they were born to speak. Founded in 1946 as the Gospel Tide Broadcasting Association, The Tide ministry has transitioned from a domestic radio program to a versatile multi-national outreach focusing on the least reached regions of the world. Through radio broadcasts in 24 heart languages, thousands of lost people are coming to know Christ. Driven by a sense of urgency to rescue the world from false teachings and pagan religious practices, The Tide board of directors is constantly working to introduce evangelistic radio programs in additional languages so that an ever increasing number of people can hear the good news about Jesus and His love for them.

The Tide outreach includes discipleship seminars, literature distribution, Bible correspondence courses and leadership training. This combination of ministry elements has proven to be extremely effective in changing lives and planting churches where believers are nurtured in their faith so that whole communities are drawn into the Kingdom of God.
