Thousands of Samaritan Ministries International Members Save Thousands of Dollars Each Year Through Health Care Sharing
Health Care Sharing Can Help Christian Families Take Control of Their Budgets and Their Health
PEORIA, Ill.—Of those who resolved to make healthy strides—physically and financially—many may have already fallen by the wayside with those 2019 goals. But Samaritan Ministries International (samaritanministries.org), one of the leading health care sharing ministries in America, hopes these resolutions for the new year will stick—especially because health care sharing makes a major impact on both.
First, more than 267,000 Samaritan Ministries members (nearly 82,000 member households) save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars each year by choosing health care sharing over health insurance premiums. Additionally, Samaritan members take more ownership of their health care, and many commit to be better stewards of their health as well.
“Samaritan Ministries members say overwhelmingly they are ‘happily uninsured’ and appreciate that Samaritan has provided a way for them to pray for and send monthly financial shares directly to their fellow members while also blessing them with encouraging personal notes and cards,” said Anthony Hopp, Samaritan’s vice president of external relations. “They love the cost savings and control, too, and for the past 25 years, Samaritan Ministries has been committed to the principles of a Biblical and affordable model of health care where all members have freedom over their choices and honor God at the same time.”
Juliana of Nebraska said her family had a deductible of over $15,000 a year with a major health insurer. She knows God led them to Samaritan Ministries.
“It has been a huge blessing to our family,” Juliana said. “I really do not know where we would be without Samaritan. We were nervous (about joining) because it’s so different from insurance. We prayed about it … and asked God to show us what to do. Then three different people who were Samaritan members shared with us about it (without us asking), so we knew God was speaking. My husband lost his job shortly after we joined, and it brought such peace of mind that we were in good hands with our health care.”
Dorothy from Texas became a Samaritan member about a year ago, and health care sharing is saving her $600 a month over health insurance premiums.
“It was a pure privilege and blessing to send my monthly share directly to a sister or brother in Christ in need,” Dorothy said. “I feel confident that when and if I do have a need, it will be met.”
Joseph and Bethany from North Carolina said they “ditched health insurance” and switched to Samaritan Ministries. At first, they weren’t sure how the model would work, but recently experienced a significant medical need.
“Receiving daily checks in the mail from other members is simply amazing,” they said. “We’ve saved over $12,000 in the past year compared to the cheapest, highest deductible bronze plan on the exchange. And our recent medical expense wouldn’t have even reached that deductible. Yet with Samaritan Ministries, it is being fully shared.”
When her “basically healthy” family’s insurance climbed to over $1,380 a month, Susan from Virginia said she began looking for alternatives.
“We are only sad that we did not join Samaritan much earlier,” Susan said. “I had a kidney stone episode last year and received every penny (for my bills). I also love knowing that I am sharing my monthly share with people who share my values.”
Marian from New York has a similar story. The Affordable Care Act plan in her state would have cost $2,000 a month with a $6,000 yearly deductible.
“My family has been a member of Samaritan Ministries for two years,” Marian said. “We love it. My only regret is that I did not know about this wonderful ministry sooner! I now pay about $500 a month with Samaritan and I look forward to paying my monthly share, sending a note and praying for the person who is ill or the new baby born. What a blessing Samaritan Ministries has been!”
Bonnie from Montana said she appreciates the way she can own her own health care.
“I really enjoy the way you encourage natural health and taking control of your health, not leaving it in the hands of others,” Bonnie said. “I like that, and I feel a greater responsibility to make the health care providers accountable too with itemized bills.”
Each month, Samaritan’s growing Biblical community shares approximately $28 million in medical needs person to person, yet the monthly share has never exceeded $495 for a family of any size and is even less for two-person and single-person households. This direct-sharing approach also allows members to not only help fellow believers with their medical financial needs, but also connect personally each month in prayer and encouragement.
Samaritan Ministries offers two membership levels, Samaritan Classic and Samaritan Basic. Samaritan Basic has a lower monthly share coupled with a higher initial unshared amount than Samaritan Classic. Monthly shares for Samaritan Basic start as low as $100 for one person, $200 for two people and $250 for a family of any size, depending on age. Some guidelines differ between Samaritan Basic and Samaritan Classic; contact Samaritan Ministries for details or visit this link.
