The Tide ministry’s fourth annual ‘Race to Share the Gospel Around the World’ brought the hope of Jesus to people in Cameroon
This powerful challenge invited participants to raise awareness of ministry outreach in Cameroon
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — For almost 80 years, The Tide® (www.thetide.org) ministry has been committed to reaching the unreached through impactful Gospel broadcasts in native languages.
For the fourth year in a row, The Tide ministry invited supporters to participate in the “Race to Share the Gospel Around the World,” an innovative in-person and virtual event that challenges participants to run, walk, bike, hike or even swim 13 miles in 16 days to make an eternal impact on the lives of millions around the world. This year, The Tide ministry designated funds raised through the race towards allowing millions of people in Cameroon to have access to the message of the Gospel.
“Last year, The Tide’s boots on the ground reported 1,365 salvations in Cameroon — averaging three to four people saved each day,” said The Tide ministry director Don Shenk. “This is a remarkable number of lives changed, including several former witch doctors, which is especially significant given their influence in the community. For this year’s ‘Race to Share the Gospel Around the World,’ we wanted to keep this momentum going and raise awareness of the growing Christian community in Cameroon.”
The Tide has been working in Cameroon since 2023, where those who are Christian face bitter persecution.
“The influence of Islamic militants, particularly in the north, has hindered the activities of many churches,” said Shenk. “It can be difficult to find a safe place where the message of the Bible can be shared. This is why The Tide ministry uses radio broadcasts to share the Gospel to reach those who may otherwise be unreachable.”
The Tide began broadcasting there in 2023 due to the many local religions, including Christianity, that tend to blend with the local superstitions of the region rather than adhering to the standards of the Bible, resulting in a pseudo-Christian belief system. Producing programs in the Fulfulde and Bulu languages allows the people to hear about the truth and love of Jesus in their own heart languages, making the Gospel message more accessible to them.
“There are still millions of people who have yet to hear the Gospel, and we are determined to make an impact worldwide,” said Shenk. “Our annual ‘Race to Share the Gospel’ is a tangible way for our supporters to learn more about what we are doing around the world and take an active part in our mission. It is exciting to know the Gospel can be shared through The Tide ministry broadcasts over radio waves in places where the majority of inhabitants do not have a personal relationship with Jesus.
“For those who are interested in learning about the Gospel but have no means of accessing a Bible, our broadcasts might be the only opportunity to know about Christ’s love for them. When everything seems so uncertain, believers in Christ can stand on the hope and promises of God that He has a plan and a purpose for everything — including our ‘Race to Share the Gospel!’”
From its humble origins in 1946 as a local Gospel radio broadcast in Chambersburg, PA, The Tide® ministry has grown into a global network of Christian media broadcasting partnerships committed to worldwide evangelism and discipleship. In 2008, The Tide® ministry ended all English-language programming in order to focus on developing and distributing indigenous heart-language content in areas around the world that are less touched by the Gospel. Today, The Tide® ministry works with partners in multiple countries across three continents to broadcast Gospel-centered messages via radio, satellite TV and other media. In order to make disciples and plant churches, The Tide® ministry also provides resources for literature distribution, correspondence courses, discipleship and leadership training activities, and the distribution of radios and media players.
