SMI celebrates third anniversary of Dobbs, when the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade

‘There’s no question that the Dobbs decision in June 2022 has saved many lives since then. But many people still are forced to subsidize abortions through their health insurance. SMI members can be assured that they will never see their share dollars being used to fund abortions.’

PEORIA, Ill. — This week marked the third anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court overruling Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the United States and led to the deaths of more than 60 million unborn children.

“There’s no question that the Dobbs decision in June 2022 has saved many lives since then,” says Anthony Hopp, vice president and chief purpose officer of Samaritan Ministries International (SMI). “But many people still are forced to subsidize abortions through their health insurance. SMI members can be assured that they will never see their share dollars being used to fund abortions.”

Most health insurers do pay for abortions, often under pressure from governments. Because they are not insurance, health care sharing ministries like Samaritan are not subject to immoral government insurance mandates. SMI operates by Biblical principles, not the ever-changing values of the secular market and government officials.

“Since the scourge of abortion remains with us, Christians are called to greater prayer and sacrifice as a way to support moms and babies in need,” Hopp says. “At Samaritan Ministries, health care expenses are shared by fellow members — but those expenses don’t include deadly procedures like abortion. We’re all about supporting God’s gift of life.”

Cameron and Hayley of Texas wrote:

“We have been members of Samaritan Ministries since we were first married. And gratefully, for many years, we didn’t have to submit health needs. It’s just been our blessing to give to the Body of Christ. However, the birth of our son did not go according to our hoped-for plan, and he was born with a heart condition. Of course, this meant a lot of unexpected medical bills. This weighed heavily on our minds until we talked with a Samaritan Ministries representative who assured us that the ministry would be there to help us pay those bills. We are so very grateful to all the brothers and sisters in Christ, a part of Samaritan Ministries, who have made this possible. Not only is the monetary provision so generous, but the outpouring of support and love we’re receiving is unmatched, from notes sent to prayers prayed with Samaritan Ministries staff. We know God always provides and is so kind to us. Samaritan Ministries reveals this so well. We cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has helped us through this challenging time!”

Renee from Michigan said:

“My husband, Tim, and I have been thrilled with Samaritan Ministries and are eager to continue our membership, especially since we’re expecting our first child… Samaritan has been such a blessing during my pregnancy.”

Sara and Cameron from Montana shared:

“I wanted to say thank you so much for all you do for us! Cam and I are so overwhelmed as we receive the shares and sweet cards/prayers from the members of Samaritan. It is overwhelming to see how much this community loves children as gifts from the Lord, and it brings so much peace to see how Madison has already been prayed for by families all over the country in her nearly three months of life. And it is so neat to get to experience provision from the members, as it is helping me better engage with the people we send money to each month. I am just feeling so overwhelmingly grateful today, and wanted to make sure you realize what a huge blessing you are to our lives in the work you do. Thank you SO MUCH!”

Since its founding in 1994, Samaritan Ministries International has helped tens of thousands of families and individuals enjoy health care freedom by allowing them to choose medical providers and treatments at reasonable cost and without network restrictions while following a biblical pattern of caring for one another’s medical needs.

Accredited by the Healthcare Sharing Accreditation Board, Samaritanhas an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and serves more than 250,000 members across almost 80,000 households.

Samaritan Ministries is not health insurance. Government exchange-based health insurance requires signups to occur only during open enrollment periods unless one qualifies for a special enrollment period due to a “life event” such as losing coverage, getting married, moving, or having a baby. In contrast, individuals can sign up with Samaritan Ministries at any time.

Samaritan Ministries members are exempt from insurance coverage mandates and penalties in those states that have them (i.e., California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C.).

Samaritan Ministries health care sharing offers many advantages, including:

  • No network restrictions. Samaritan members have the freedom of choice for their health care provider, hospital, and pharmacy that works best for them.
  • The unique direct-sharing approach does more than just help members financially; it also encourages a biblical community based on prayer. Due to member efforts, monthly shares are hundreds of dollars less per month than health insurance premiums.

To understand how health care sharing is not insurance, and to understand the differences from insurance, prospective members are required to review Samaritan Ministries’ guidelines before joining Samaritan.
