CBMC’s Labor Day message: Reflect on work’s basics, recommit to purpose

‘Know that your work is ultimately for Jesus, let your labor reflect your God-given talents,’ says CBMC’s Joe Beckler

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — As Americans prepare to observe Labor Day with relaxation and gatherings of friends and families, Christian men in the workplace are reminded that the annual holiday is also a time to pause and reflect on work’s basics: why they do what they do, and Who their ultimate employer really is.

According to Christian Business Men’s Connection (CBMC), the Bible reveals a Christian’s ultimate employer is actually Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:23). Understanding this brings a new perspective to work for those willing to put that into practice.

“Work should never be an exercise of ‘going through the motions,’ but rather it should reflect our devotion to serving God and each other,” says Joe Beckler, CBMC Vice President, Development, Marketing and Communications. “Internalizing that standard can help Christian men in the workplace add quality and value to their businesses and their communities.”

Keeping the fundamentals of Christian living in sight in the workplace can be difficult on days when deadlines and challenges press in. That’s why CBMC is using Labor Day’s annual pause to remind Christians of the opportunity they have to express God’s purpose in work during their daily lives.

CBMC’s blog post, “Getting Back To The Fundamentals Of Work,” recalls legendary football coach Vince Lombardi’s annual start of each season. Gathering players together, he held up an elongated leather object, saying, “Men, this is a football.” It’s not that his athletes didn’t know this, but by going back to the fundamentals, they could recommit to their purpose: winning athletic competitions.

Similarly, Christian men in the workplace who remember for Whom they ultimately work are expressing God’s plan for man: to excel as His representatives. Additionally, those who augment their professional training with Bible study and meditation, and who remember they ultimately represent the Lord, bring an added dimension to their labors, as they are alert to opportunities to share the Gospel.

“We’re not here only to fulfill a job requirement and retire from a career,” CBMC’s Beckler says. “Christian men in the workplace have a responsibility — the Lord’s own command — to represent Him in their lives and tell others the Good News. Labor Day 2025 is an excellent time to reflect on this challenge and opportunity.”
