Mamdani agenda signals break from American foundations, Truth & Liberty warns
As New York’s new mayor embraces collectivism, Truth & Liberty calls believers to ‘educate, unify, mobilize’ in defense of constitutional principles
WOODLAND PARK, Colo. — A recent USA Today opinion column arguing New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani “wants to pull New York away from American success” is fueling renewed concern among national Christian leaders who warn that collectivist ideology threatens the nation’s constitutional foundations.
The column, published Jan. 5, said Mamdani’s early statements and policy direction reflect a sharp ideological turn for America’s largest city, away from principles that have historically defined the country’s political and economic system. Mamdani, 34, was sworn in on New Year’s Day after winning the mayoral race last fall.
In his inaugural address, Mamdani openly rejected the American tradition of individual liberty, saying, “We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”
Richard Harris, executive director of Truth & Liberty, said the statement signals a worldview fundamentally opposed to the nation’s founding ideals and underscores the urgency of the organization’s mandate to “educate, unify, mobilize believers in Jesus Christ to affect the reformation of nations through the seven mountains of cultural influence.”
Harris said Mamdani’s collectivist outlook elevates the pursuit of a government-defined “common good,” even when that pursuit infringes on individual rights. The organization said that the approach collides directly with the principles embedded in the U.S. Constitution and the system of representative government created to protect what the Declaration of Independence describes as Creator-given rights.
“What we are watching unfold in New York is not simply a local political shift; it is an open challenge to the philosophical foundations that made this country free and prosperous,” said Harris.
Harris said collectivist ideologies, regardless of how they are branded, have historically concentrated power in government institutions at the expense of personal liberty, religious freedom and economic opportunity.
“The American experiment was built on the radical idea that rights come from God, not the state, and that government exists to protect those rights, not redefine them,” Harris said. “When a mayor declares that rugged individualism should be replaced, he is declaring war on the very engine that lifted millions out of poverty and allowed faith communities to flourish.”
The USA Today column argued that Mamdani’s platform represents a rejection of the liberal political philosophy that shaped the American founding, which emphasized limited government, private property and individual responsibility.
“To claim a mandate to move the nation’s largest city away from America’s core principles is not bold leadership — it is a betrayal of the constitutional order,” Harris said. “Such a desire is vile, and such an outlook should be rejected by Americans who understand what is at stake.”
Truth & Liberty’s mission is rooted in preserving America’s constitutional republic, built on the consent of the governed through democratically elected representatives, for the express purpose of securing individual liberty.
“We exist for moments like this,” Harris said. “Our call to educate, unify and mobilize believers is not a slogan. It is a necessary response when cultural and political forces attempt to sever the nation from its biblical and constitutional roots.”
The organization said it will continue equipping pastors, community leaders and everyday citizens with teaching, media programming and grassroots engagement tools designed to confront collectivist narratives and articulate a faith-based defense of liberty.
“If the church retreats from the public square, others will gladly redefine it,” Harris said. “We are urging Christians across the country to engage now — informed, unified and anchored in truth — because the future of American freedom depends on it.”
