Respect for life is a worldview, not a talking point
Human life is sacred — and that dignity is not assigned by power, preference or circumstance
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Since its inception over a decade ago, Trail Life USA (TrailLifeUSA.com) has been focused on a singular vision: to become the premier national character development organization for young men, which produces godly and responsible husbands, fathers and citizens.
According to Trail Life CEO Mark Hancock, such men are foundational to the well-being of society. This is no mere coincidence, he says. Instead, a boy’s destiny is hardwired into his DNA.
“The Y chromosome is not incidental,” shared Hancock. “The Y matters! And there’s a ‘why’ behind that Y. It reflects God’s purposeful design, including a responsibility He has woven into men to protect life. At its core, masculinity is designed to promote and protect life and human flourishing.”
Indeed, Hancock said, “Respect for Life is one of Trail Life’s Six Essential Concepts of a Christian Worldview — not simply an issue to be discussed, but as a lens through which we see every human being, ourselves and our calling.”
To commemorate this principle, Trail Life will hold its Respect Life Month from late January through February.
Hancock noted, “Out of all of God’s creation, human beings are uniquely made in His image and likeness, and therefore all human life, from conception through natural death, has unquestionable value, worth and dignity.
“Because each human person is sacred and has intrinsic value, worth and dignity, they should receive proper respect and protection regardless of age, disability, economic status, ethnicity, location, race, sex or sinful tendencies.
“When Respect for Life is understood as a lens, it changes how we see people. It reshapes how we see individuals with disabilities, the elderly neighbor, the homeless veteran and the shut-in who feels forgotten.
“A worldview must be lived. Worldviews are shaped by habits, practices and examples. That is why Respect for Life cannot remain theoretical. At Trail Life, boys are not only taught what Christians believe, but are given opportunities to observe men who walk the walk, and then to live it out practically through service, leadership and relationships.”
Hancock concluded, “When boys are taught — through word and deed — that every human life bears God’s image, they grow into men who lead with courage, humility and conviction. Men who protect the vulnerable. Men who honor sacrifice. Men who understand that real strength is found in service. When boys learn to see life through the lens of Respect for Life, they begin to understand that their strength is a gift meant to serve.”
As the largest Christ-centered, boy-focused scout-type organization in the country, Trail Life celebrates what makes boys unique and provides them with a safe space to explore and develop masculinity while building relationships with mentors and peers, learning leadership skills and experiencing outdoor adventure.
Trail Life USA has received praise from some of today’s top Christian voices, including Focus on the Family, Franklin Graham, James Dobson, Mike Huckabee, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, Family Life, Promise Keepers, the American Family Association, and many others.
