Samaritan Ministries and REDEEM™: Health care aligned with life and biblical values

SMI and REDEEM™ members know that they will never be asked to send money for procedures that end a human life or anything else that violates the teachings of the Bible’

PEORIA, Ill. — Every year, Samaritan Ministries International (SMI) observes Sanctity of Life month in January, recognizing the precious value of each and every human being.

“This underscores our commitment to support the sanctity of life in all phases, from conception to the end of a person’s days on this earth,” said Anthony Hopp, SMI’s vice president and chief purpose officer.

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, when churches across America recognize God’s inestimable gift of human life, is celebrated every year on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion in all 50 states.

The mood has been different but just as determined since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe on June 24, 2022, in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling. This sent the issue back to the states, with many enacting their own laws — some protecting life and some protecting access to abortion.

“While the Dobbs decision rightly returned the decision to the American people, our work to protect life continues at the state and federal levels,” the March for Life website says. “We envision a world where every life is celebrated, valued, and protected.”

“For SMI and REDEEM™ members, they know that they will never be asked to send money for procedures that end a human life or anything else that violates the teachings of the Bible,” Hopp said. “Samaritan Ministries and REDEEM™ are committed to honoring Christ, protecting life as God has created it, and serving one another through health care.”

REDEEM™ HealthShare, Samaritan Ministries’ next generation of health care sharing, and Samaritan Ministries are together addressing the kinds of needs close to Jesus’s heart and helping to redeem health care in the process.

The REDEEM™ Purpose: To glorify God by growing and equipping disciples of Jesus Christ to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love and care for their neighbor as themselves.

The REDEEM™ Mission: To redeem health care by helping the Body of Christ love one another through sharing each other’s health care burdens while experiencing authentic biblical community.

What SMI members are saying:

James and Michelle, from Michigan, said:

“Michelle and I are very delighted to be a part of Samaritan Ministries. We love the concept and believe it truly is the most biblical way to handle medical needs among the body of Christ.”

David, from Massachusetts, wrote:

“God has blessed our family by having Samaritan Ministries for our healthcare support. With Samaritan, we know exactly where our money is going, to whom, and for what medical condition. It is Christians caring for Christians, and surely this is what God intended. A note with each share received is the icing on the cake, and it is especially wonderful to know that people are praying for your healing. Thank you, Samaritan Ministries.”

Since its founding in 1994, Samaritan Ministries International has helped more than a million Christians enjoy health care freedom by allowing them to choose medical providers and treatments at reasonable cost and without network restrictions while following a biblical pattern of caring for one another’s medical needs.

Accredited by the Healthcare Sharing Accreditation Board, Samaritanhas an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and serves more than 250,000 members across more than 70,000 households.

REDEEMTMis not health insurance. Government exchange-based health insurance requires signups to occur only during open enrollment periods unless one qualifies for a special enrollment period due to a “life event” such as losing coverage, getting married, moving, or having a baby. In contrast, individuals can sign up with REDEEM at any time. REDEEM members are exempt from insurance coverage mandates and penalties in those states that have them (i.e., California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C.).

REDEEM HealthShare Ministry offers many advantages, including:

  • No network restrictions. REDEEM members have the freedom of choice for their health care provider, hospital, and pharmacy that works best for them.
  • The unique direct-sharing approach does more than just help members financially; it also encourages a biblical community based on prayer. Due to member efforts, monthly shares are hundreds of dollars less per month than health insurance premiums.

To understand how health care sharing is not insurance, and to understand the differences from insurance, prospective members are required to review REDEEM’s guidelines before joining.
