Rise in gold does not automatically signal an imminent dollar collapse, says FISM host

‘Economic data today, including growth, productivity gains and income trends, look fundamentally stronger than the conditions leading into 2008, even allowing for normal revisions’

PHILADELPHIA — American economist Peter Schiff argued that the rising price of gold signals an increase in inflation, loss of global trust in the U.S. dollar and a major economic reckoning in the near future. “Central banks are buying gold to back up their currencies. They’re getting rid of dollars. According to Schiff, the federal government is the leading reason why gold is at an all-time high because the U.S. dollar is at a historic low.

Financial Issues (FISM) host Mark Minnella says that while Schiff’s claims are biased, his concerns highlight the biggest danger to the nation: debt and deficit spending.

“Peter Schiff raises familiar concerns about debt, inflation and monetary discipline, but his conclusions once again overshoot the evidence,” said Minnella. “While gold’s rise reflects caution and global uncertainty, it does not automatically signal an imminent dollar collapse, a claim he has repeatedly made for years without materializing. Economic data today, including growth, productivity gains and income trends, look fundamentally stronger than the conditions leading into 2008, even allowing for normal revisions. As Peter Schiff has shown historically, his warnings are often amplified by a conflict of interest tied to his Euro Pacific Capital investment firm, known for promoting gold, precious metals and non-U.S. assets, and have frequently proven wrong in their severity and timing. Where we find common ground is that we both agree the biggest danger to the U.S. is its debt and deficit spending, which can no longer be ignored.”
