Trail Life USA equips boys with moral courage to stand on principle, not popular opinion

Mark Hancock, Trail Life USA CEO: ‘You cannot teach boys responsibility while modeling uncertainty about first principles. You cannot cultivate conviction while signaling that beliefs are temporary accommodations’

GREENVILLE, S.C. — In a culture increasingly unmoored from enduring truth, Trail Life USA (TrailLifeUSA.com) is helping boys become men whose principles are firmly anchored in the Bible.

According to Trail Life CEO Mark Hancock, “To counteract this cultural shift, willing men must reintroduce boys to the principles that have historically shaped godly young men. Faith, character growth and leadership must be seamlessly integrated into their lives, drawing inspiration from both real-life role models and the stories of courage and conviction passed down through generations.”

As the largest Christ-centered, boy-focused scout-type organization in the country, Trail Life is preparing the next generation by promoting timeless biblical values that informed America’s greatest leaders, including founding father John Adams.

As a young lawyer, Adams believed that liberty could not endure without morality grounded in faith. Long before he helped craft constitutions and negotiate treaties, he faced a personal test of conscience on the cold, tense streets of Boston in 1770. He defended the British soldiers after the Boston Massacre — risking his reputation, his career, even his safety — because justice mattered to him more than applause.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, Adams understood something we’re in danger of forgetting: Liberty cannot survive without moral courage. And moral courage must be anchored in truth. Adams declared that, “If, by supporting the rights of mankind, and of invincible truth… I shall contribute to save one unfortunate victim of tyranny… his blessings… will be sufficient consolation to me for the contempt of all mankind.”

That’s the kind of courage Trail Life is striving to form.

“You cannot teach boys responsibility while modeling uncertainty about first principles,” says Hancock. “You cannot cultivate conviction while signaling that beliefs are temporary accommodations.”

Amid heated rhetoric, rising tensions and a populace chafing under British rule, John Adams made the first of many defining choices — choices informed by the contours of his faith.

“The general principles of Christianity,” Adams would later write, “are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.” Here was the source of his confidence and courage.

“Character requires moral grounding. Roots set in something solid,” says Hancock. “When values are tethered too tightly to the priorities of a particular moment, they become brittle. The wise man builds his house on the rock. Formation depends on steadiness — on leaders and institutions that demonstrate coherence over time.”

What others saw as disloyalty, Adams recognized as service to a higher principle — that justice must remain impartial even in moments of anger, fear and uncertainty. In standing for that truth, Adams not only defended the rights of the accused, but he modeled the moral courage that would guide a burgeoning nation.

Hancock shared, “At Trail Life, we teach about the character, faith, fortitude and pioneering spirit of the men and women who made America great. We instill character, honor and a sense of duty to God and others. These principles are foundational to the mission of Trail Life.”
