‘Expectation creep’ grips the minds of young Americans’ making them miserable
‘Financial Issues’ host: ‘Beneath that is something deeper, a generational drift away from biblical foundations like gratitude and contentment, replaced by a growing focus on materialism’
PHILADELPHIA — Younger Americans struggle to afford many things it seems generations before them were able to easily purchase. The elephant in the room may not be affordability, according to a recent article in The Federalist, but entitlement or ‘lifestyle expectation inflation.’ Some parents have actually fostered unrealistic expectations in their children. “Unlike the parents of Generation X, many modern parents think every child needs his own bedroom, every driver needs his own car, and that buying a ‘starter home’ with plans to trade up to a McMansion is just ‘the basics,’” explained the outlet.
Beyond the misconceptions surrounding what defines American living, Mark Minnella, host of “Financial Issues” (FISM), calls to mind a deeper issue that youth are grappling with: the departure from biblical foundations.
“This piece makes a point that’s uncomfortable but hard to ignore for many Americans: the issue of expectation creep,” shared Minnella. “As the author argues, what we now consider ‘basic’ middle-class living would have looked like luxury to prior generations, from multiple cars to larger homes and outsourced childcare. But beneath that is something deeper, a generational drift away from biblical foundations like gratitude and contentment, replaced by a growing focus on materialism. The shorter our focus becomes on what we can accumulate, the less we appreciate what we already have. That is why this is not just an economic issue, it is a spiritual one. When we stay rooted in Christ and His Word, we gain a perspective that brings peace and contentment, even in a culture where everything around us is constantly calling for more.”
Financial Issues’ (FISM) unique programming helps Christians find freedom and purpose in financial stewardship, empowering them to make biblically faithful choices in a world filled with competing voices.
