Texas pastor, activists rebuke school board for allowing pornographic books
USPIE: ‘We need more leaders who are standing firm in what is morally right for our children’
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Texas pastor and other activists clashed with the board of the state’s largest school district over their allowing explicit materials in school libraries.
The exchanges took place at a recent board meeting of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), where some parents and other constituents demanded the removal of sexually graphic and profane books, according to The Christian Post.
Pastor Rick Scarborough, a Southern Baptist minister, said that after more than 50 years in full-time ministry and having spoken to more than 20,000 pastors, he had “never [seen] a biblical pastor who supports children having access to books that are so explicit they are banned in our prisons here in Texas.”
Bonnie Wallace, a legislative liaison, attempted to read an explicit excerpt from “A Court of Silver Flames” by Sarah Maas, which is available in some HISD high schools. She was cut off by several board members. Police escorted her from the meeting after she said, “If you don’t like it, remove it… so children won’t have access to it.”
“This illustrates the hypocrisy of so many school officials,” said Sheri Few, founder and president of United States Parents Involved in Education (USPIE). “They censor speakers rather than allow them to publicly expose what they’re serving up in school every day. If it’s too graphic for their own tender little ears, why do they subject children to it?”
Scarborough then warned that he would potentially pursue legal action if the board continued its failure to take action against contested books.
“USPIE applauds Pastor Rick Scarborough for standing up for America’s biblical foundations and the sanctity of America’s youth,” Few said. “We need more leaders like him who are standing firm in what is morally right for our children.
“We’ve seen time and time again how the aggressive liberal agenda has pushed explicit books on kids to indoctrinate them. That is a line no institution should be allowed to cross. The government education system in America is fundamentally broken, and the only way to protect children is to get them out of government schools.”

United States Parents Involved in Education (USPIE) is a nonprofit, nationwide coalition that is fighting to return education to its proper local roots and restore parental authority over their children’s education by helping parents and local communities to escape federal and other national influences. It is the vision of USPIE to create a culture where parents, empowered with the authority to choose what and how their children learn, are the undisputed primary educators of their children, where local schools operate in support of families, and where education is unencumbered by federal mandates.
USPIE’s powerful documentary, “Truth & Lies in American Education,” addresses some of the most glaring issues in the American education system and helps parents experience a paradigm shift in how they think about education and the role of their local schools. The film follows Few’s daughter-in-law, April, as she seeks to learn more about the system she was planning on exposing to her own children and learns the shocking truth. “Truth & Lies in American Education” is available for streaming on SalemNOW, as well as on DVD.
