Viewpoint discrimination: Pro-life club shut down for being too ‘political’
AFA Action CEO: ‘Silencing pro-life messaging while permitting other forms of advocacy exposes a double standard that has no place in public education’
TUPELO, Miss. — A student at Noblesville High School in Indiana, who started a Students for Life of America (SFLA) chapter, is taking action against the school for derecognizing the pro-life club. The student, E.D., followed the requirements to open an SFLA chapter, including approval from the school’s principal, but the club was later disbanded after the school deemed the club’s fliers, with images of “Defund Planned Parenthood” signs, too “political.”
E.D. is now being represented by Charitable Allies, who filed a lawsuit against Noblesville Schools in federal court. Alliance Defending Freedom and Charitable Allies have petitioned the Supreme Court to review the Seventh Circuit’s decision and uphold students’ rights to free speech.
“An administrator shutting down a student-run pro-life club for being ‘too political’ is viewpoint discrimination, plain and simple,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association.
“Students don’t lose their First Amendment rights when they walk into school, especially when other viewpoints are clearly allowed. Silencing pro-life messaging while permitting other forms of advocacy exposes a double standard that has no place in public education. If schools are going to allow student expression, they can’t pick which beliefs are acceptable based on their own agenda or political affiliations.”
