‘Financial Issues’ host reveals the only bailout that ever worked
‘The life, death and resurrection of Jesus stands apart as the greatest debt reorganization in the history of the universe’
PHILADELPHIA — Modern-day culture has revealed that people embrace debt as much as almost anything else. Entire economies have risen and fallen under its weight, and when that weight becomes too heavy, the same solutions are sought out every time: restructure it, refinance it or cry for a bailout. But history has shown something uncomfortable: most bailouts don’t fix the problem; they shift it, delay it and move the burden from one place to another.
Looking back at the financial crisis of 2008, Mark Minnella, host of “Financial Issues” (FISM), remarks on how the collapse was slowed, markets were calmed, but the underlying reality did not disappear. Risk was transferred, losses were absorbed by the government, and the burden fell on taxpayers and future generations.
In his recent op-ed for Townhall, Minnella reflects on the state of the nation’s debt, and how the life, death and resurrection of Jesus was the greatest debt reorganization in the history of the universe — the only bailout that actually worked.
“The life, death and resurrection of Jesus was not a negotiation, nor was it a restructuring plan where terms were softened and timelines extended. There was no partial forgiveness, no shared burden, no future liability hanging over our heads. This was a full and final settlement,” said Minnella. “The debt was not reduced. It was paid… in full. And the cost was not spread across society or deferred into the future. It was taken on completely by one.”
“In financial terms, that kind of transaction does not exist. In human terms, it makes no sense. But in eternal terms, it changes everything. Because the truth is, the debt we carry is not merely financial. It is moral. It is spiritual. It is a debt we could never repay, no matter how disciplined, successful or well-intentioned we might be,” Minnella explained.
“We spend so much of our lives trying to get ahead, trying to manage what we owe, trying to make sure we are not upside down. But the most important ledger has already been settled. And we are the beneficiaries.”
