Congressional ‘restraint’ efforts on Iran risk US troops, retired Air Force colonel warns
Col. Robert L. Maness, USAF-ret., says lawmakers should stop ‘playing games’ with service members’ safety as War Powers debate intensifies
GULFPORT, Miss. — Col. Robert L. Maness, USAF-ret., warns congressional efforts to limit President Donald Trump’s military options in Iran could place American troops at greater risk while undermining commanders already operating under the War Powers Act.
Congress departed Washington at the end of April without voting to authorize or halt military action involving Iran, despite a 60-day War Powers Act deadline that expired May 1. According to reports, lawmakers now have 30 additional days before military operations must wind down absent congressional authorization.
“The War Powers Act was passed by Congress, and President Trump is following it to the letter,” said Maness. “Although many think it is an unconstitutional attempt to restrict presidential power, every president follows it. Congress needs to stop playing games and adding additional risk to our American service members in harm’s way. Any Republican supporting the restraint effort should be put on notice that they will face a strong primary challenger.”
A decorated combat veteran and retired U.S. Air Force colonel, Maness spent over three decades in military service, including command assignments during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Future Operations Group following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Supporters of congressional restraint efforts argue that lawmakers should reassert constitutional authority over military engagements overseas. Maness contends that such actions create uncertainty for troops and commanders during rapidly evolving operations.
“When Congress sends mixed signals during active military operations, adversaries notice,” Maness said. “America’s enemies pay attention to hesitation, division and political maneuvering. Our service members deserve clarity of mission and unwavering support from the leaders who sent them into harm’s way.”
Beyond national security issues, Maness continues speaking to audiences nationwide through “The Rob Maness Show” and through his new book, “What You Can Do About It,” available now on Amazon, as well as on the Amazon Kindle. The book urges Americans to take direct action against corruption, radicalism and what Maness describes as moral decline in American institutions.
In the book, Maness argues that conservatives too often settle for temporary political victories while progressive activists pursue long-term cultural influence through education, media and government institutions.
“Americans who love this country cannot afford to sit on the sidelines and hope someone else fixes these problems,” Maness said. “Real change begins when ordinary citizens decide they are willing to act locally, speak boldly and refuse to surrender their values.”
