IgniteAmerica Founder, Barry Meguiar: Worship music is more than lyrics and music — it’s a Gospel witness
Meguiar says biblical worship helps move people closer to Jesus and toward lasting spiritual transformation
PHOENIX — Founder and President of IgniteAmerica, Barry Meguiar, is encouraging the Church to remember that biblical worship is ultimately designed to direct attention toward God through theologically sound lyrics. A recent gathering at Meguiar’s home for Likewise Ministries focused on encouraging worship leaders and ministry leaders to pursue authentic, God-centered worship. His admonition and the event come amid a growing audience for worship music programs on television and streaming platforms, as well as broader conversations about ensuring worship songs remain rooted in sound theology rather than emotional or self-focused messaging.
Meguiar said worship carries spiritual significance because it shapes how believers understand God, respond to Him and grow in their faith. While music and creative presentation can support worship, he said churches must remain intentional about choosing songs that faithfully reflect Scripture and the character of God.
“The goal of worship is not emotional inspiration, but a deeper understanding of who God is,” said Meguiar. “When worship lyrics become centered more on personal feelings, self-empowerment or vague spirituality than on the truth of Scripture, churches risk shaping people with messages that sound uplifting but are disconnected from the Gospel.”
A recent “American Idol” faith-themed episode featured contestants performing worship songs and openly discussing faith with several participants and viewers describing the evening as spiritually impactful and reflective of God’s presence. Meguiar said such moments can encourage spiritual conversations about the importance of distinguishing worship music from other songs.
“The songs churches sing, and the messages they emphasize shape how congregations understand the character and work of God,” Meguiar said. “Worship leaders are not simply musicians or performers. They are theological communicators helping the church express its faith through sung prayer.”
IgniteAmerica encourages believers to “Move Everyone, Every Day, Closer to Jesus.” Meguiar said worship plays an important role in that mission because many people first encounter the Gospel through church gatherings and worship services.
Research and theological teaching alike affirm worship’s central role in the life of faith. Worship leaders are doing more than selecting songs — they are “shepherding hearts,” and the theology communicated through worship music helps shape believers’ understanding of God. Meguiar said that reality places a serious responsibility on worship leaders and pastors.
“Worship and evangelism are closely connected because God-focused worship not only strengthens believers in their faith but moves them to share it with others,” Meguiar said. “When churches create worship environments grounded in Scripture and centered on the truth of Christ, people encounter something far greater than emotion or excitement. They encounter the presence of God, compelling them to live out and share that faith.”
Through IgniteAmerica and Ignite NextGen, Meguiar continues encouraging churches, families and young believers to share their faith boldly while remaining grounded in biblical truth and Christ-centered discipleship.
“Our clear message is that sharing your faith at every opportunity turns every day into an adventure and is what being a Christian is all about,” Meguiar said.
