Too many retiring Americans may be too dependent on Social Security, warns ‘Financial Issues’ host
Mark Minnella: ‘A wise retirement is built on preparation and responsibility, not dependency on government’
PHILADELPHIA — Although 40% of retirees claim on surveys that Social Security provides 40% of their income, researchers have found that number may be as low as 14%. Many retirees fail to report 401(k) and IRA withdrawals, but this does not fully resolve the financial problems retirees can face, especially the specter of outliving their savings.
“Even if the numbers become distorted because retirees underreport other income sources like IRA withdrawals, 401(k) distributions, pensions, and savings, this can spell trouble for many,” said Mark Minnella, host of “Financial Issues” (FISM). “Even if the true number is 39%, 24%, or 14%, it is that too many Americans are still entering retirement with Social Security carrying more weight than it was ever designed to carry.”
The solutions are to take personal responsibility for financial decisions and to follow Biblical best practices for the stewardship of all resources.
“Social Security was meant to be a safety net, not a full retirement plan. That is why taking control of your retirement savings matters, staying disciplined, reducing debt, and making sure your money is aligned with both your needs and your moral beliefs is so important. A wise retirement is built on stewardship, preparation, and personal responsibility, not dependency on government,” Minnella said.
Financial Issues’ (FISM) unique programming helps Christians find freedom and purpose in financial stewardship, empowering them to make biblically faithful choices in a world filled with competing voices. By tuning in, viewers and listeners will discover how to navigate their financial journey with clarity, integrity and a Kingdom-minded perspective.
