After nearly 20 years of steady decline, the share of Americans who identify as Christians shows signs of leveling off, according to a recent 2025 Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults. Yet, across many regions of the world, such as Africa, Asia and Latin America, Christianity continues to grow at unprecedented rates with a projected global faith population of nearly 3 billion by the year 2050.
According to Global Christian Relief, “The growth of Christianity is notably strong in countries with higher population growth rates and in regions where the faith is newer and often embraced by the youth.” At the same time, millions of people still live in places where the Gospel has not yet been widely shared, and where Christianity is illegal or effectively banned, making it dangerous or impossible to share the Good News.
Understanding what Christianity overseas looks like today helps believers see both the progress of the Gospel and the opportunities that still exist for Christian missions worldwide, particularly in regions where access to Scripture and Christian teaching remains limited or restricted.
Globally, the Church is far from stagnant. Today, there are more than 8 billion people on earth, and an estimated 3.42 billion live in unreached people groups with little or no access to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That means nearly half the world’s population may not have opportunities to hear the meaningful message of Christ. For Christians who care about the Great Commission, this reality highlights why global Christian missions remain so important.
