Patriotism remains strong despite poll showing decline, retired Air Force Colonel says

Col. Rob L. Maness, USAF-ret.: Pride in America is evident in communities where faith, service and freedom still define daily life

GULFPORT, Miss. — A new NBC News poll showing fewer Americans describe themselves as “extremely proud” to be Americans does not reflect the patriotism still found across much of the country, according to Col. Rob L. Maness, USAF-ret.

NBC News data analyst Steve Kornacki highlighted polling showing that only one-third of respondents said they were “extremely proud” to be Americans, continuing a decline from previous decades. The findings were discussed in a report by The Daily Caller.

“Questioning the article and that NBC poll it discusses, I see it as another attempt to divide us,” Col. Maness said. “No amount of polling can erase the fact that our military service, community values and love for freedom define who we are as true patriots.”

The veteran Air Force officer added, “As someone from Gulfport, Mississippi, I can tell you American patriotism is alive and thriving. People still value faith, respect the Constitution and willingly sacrifice for one another. Visitors from around the world see that spirit when they come here.”

In his new book, “What You Can Do About It,” Col. Robert L. Maness, USAF-ret., encourages Americans to respond to challenges rather than surrender to discouragement.

“We should keep celebrating the virtues that make America exceptional, reject divisive narratives and remain united as the nation people around the world continue to admire,” Maness said.
