Massachusetts late-term abortion law prompts doctor to speak out about dangers to mother and child
AFA Action CEO: ‘Massachusetts should be advancing policies that value both lives, not putting one at risk to end the other’
TUPELO, Miss. — Dr. Christina Francis, OBGYN and CEO of the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs, is pushing back against Massachusetts’ Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act, which allows for abortions up until birth. According to Dr. Francis, “If a woman’s life is in danger, if she’s facing a pregnancy complication beyond 24 weeks, we simply deliver her. And in fact, delivery is much more expedient than a later-in-pregnancy abortion procedure.” The board-certified OBGYN went on to cite the dangers of the law, explaining that third-trimester abortions can lead to a significant risk of complications for the mother and are medically unnecessary; she believes scientific evidence reveals fetuses can feel pain much earlier in pregnancy.
In response to Dr. Francis’ concerns about the bill, Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, says that politicians in Massachusetts are misleading women by portraying late-term abortions as safe and acceptable.
“Massachusetts politicians claim this absurd abortion law is about protecting women, but doctors are warning it could do exactly the opposite,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association. “When a mother is facing a medical emergency late in pregnancy, she deserves the fastest, safest care possible — not an abortion procedure that can take days and expose her to additional dangerous complications when her baby could simply be delivered.
“Women are being lied to, and they deserve more than politicians using their health as cover to eliminate protections for unborn children through all nine months of pregnancy. Protecting a mother and protecting her child are not competing interests. Massachusetts should be advancing policies that value both lives, not putting one at risk to end the other.”
