Col. Rob Maness: Jeffries-Kushner meeting reflects pragmatism, not betrayal
House Democratic leader’s willingness to talk with Trump’s son-in-law on affordability should be a model, not a target for political attacks
GULFPORT, Miss. — Col. Robert L. Maness, USAF-ret. said today that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ private meeting with Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, reflects pragmatism that responsible leaders should embrace, not condemn.
The New York Times reported Sunday that Jeffries and Kushner met privately to discuss housing, immigration and the cost of living ahead of the midterms. Facing backlash, Jeffries said Monday on X that Kushner initiated the meeting, adding that “no one from the Trump Cartel is getting a pass,” according to The Hill.
“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ decision to meet privately with Jared Kushner to explore potential common ground on housing, immigration and the cost of living reflects a pragmatic approach that responsible leaders should embrace rather than condemn. In defending the meeting, Jeffries correctly noted that affordability challenges facing American families are real and demand serious attention from both parties. Yet his simultaneous insistence that ‘no one from the Trump Cartel is getting a pass’ and his pledge to hold officials accountable ‘beginning on day one’ underscore the persistent partisan framing that too often prioritizes political theater over results,” Maness said.
“Critics on the left who demand subpoenas instead of dialogue reveal an intolerance for any constructive engagement outside their preferred ideological boundaries. Kushner, drawing on his private-sector experience and prior work on bipartisan criminal justice reform, is fully entitled to discuss policy matters as a private citizen,” he added.
Maness said, “True leadership requires the capacity to separate personal or partisan grievances from the practical needs of the American people. Ultimately, voters will judge whether elected officials deliver solutions on the issues that matter most or merely recycle familiar rhetoric.”
