Texas and Florida recognize gold and silver as legal tender

‘These states are giving citizens another way to preserve and transact their wealth rather than leaving them completely dependent upon Washington’s monetary decisions,’ says Mark Minnella

PHILADELPHIA — Beginning September 1, Texas will recognize gold and silver as legal tender, following in the footsteps of Florida’s Senate Bill 1588, which took effect on July 1. Texas’ law, HB 1056, “directs the state comptroller to stand up an electronic system, backed by bullion held in the Texas Bullion Depository, that converts a holder’s metal at the point of sale.”

With this legislation for Florida and Texas, both states are developing a payment rail on which Americans can carry metal, swipe a card and settle a debt, all with an asset beyond the Federal Reserve’s printing power.

“I see this as a healthy development, not because gold and silver should replace the dollar, but because competition and choice can bring discipline to a monetary system that desperately needs it,” said Financial Issues” (FISM) host Mark Minnella. “After decades of federal deficits, mounting debt and the steady erosion of purchasing power, Texas and Florida are giving citizens another way to preserve and transact their wealth rather than leaving them completely dependent upon Washington’s monetary decisions.

“Texas will recognize qualifying gold and silver as legal tender beginning September 1, with its broader electronic transactional system scheduled for 2027, while Florida’s legal-tender provisions took effect July 1. This does not make gold risk-free, nor does it mean everyone should rush out and put their savings into precious metals; gold can be extremely volatile and should still be viewed within the context of a diversified financial plan. But from a stewardship perspective, I like anything that encourages sound money, personal responsibility, diversification and accountability for those entrusted with managing our currency.

“Perhaps the greatest benefit is not whether millions of Americans ultimately spend gold and silver, but whether the existence of a legitimate alternative reminds Washington that Americans should never be taken for granted as captive customers of an endlessly depreciating currency.”

Financial Issues’ (FISM) unique programming helps Christians find freedom and purpose in financial stewardship, empowering them to make biblically faithful choices in a world filled with competing voices.
