Dr. Michael A. Youssef warns ‘Red-Green Omnicause’ is growing more vocal, extreme
In ‘An Unholy Alliance,’ noted Christian author says shared opposition toward America and Christian faith binds socialists and radical Islamists
ATLANTA — Dr. Michael A. Youssef says a coalition linking socialist causes and radical Islamist activism is becoming “bigger, more vocal, and more extreme in its views,” warning that apparent ideological contradictions have not weakened what he calls the “Red-Green Omnicause.”
A key example of this unlikely — but also politically potent — alliance is found in the state of Michigan, where Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed has been endorsed by independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), a lawmaker and self-described socialist. Other socialists endorsing El-Sayed include Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Summer Lee (D-Pa.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
At the same time, progressive Texas state Rep. James Talarico — seeking a U.S. Senate seat in the Lone Star state — who often touts his status as a Presbyterian seminary student, told a podcast in 2024, “I know personally that I’ve learned as much about my faith … from the Islamic mystics, from poets like Rumi, as much as I have from Christian authors and Christian writers.”
These examples, from different ends of the Democratic Party spectrum, suggest a growing closeness between liberal politicians and Islamist allies, something Dr. Youssef believes should concern every American, and especially evangelical Christians.
In the opening chapter of his latest book, “An Unholy Alliance: How Progressivism Brought About an Islamist Invasion,” Dr. Youssef describes the “Omnicause” as a framework in which left-wing movements adopt one another’s causes, even when their underlying beliefs appear incompatible.
“‘Omnicause’ simply means that every left-wing cause is adopted by the left; these causes are generally anti-American and seek to undermine Christian truth,” Dr. Youssef said. “The Omnicause is what unites the two parts of the unholy alliance between socialists (red) and radical Islamists (green), who otherwise have nothing in common but their enmity toward America and the Christian faith.”
As an example, Dr. Youssef points to pro-Palestinian demonstrations in which LGBTQ activists have joined protests supporting Gaza despite the treatment of homosexuality by Hamas.
He said, “When we watch the news, we may see protesters with signs that say ‘Gays for Gaza!’ or ‘Queers for Palestine!’ And we can’t help thinking, ‘Don’t these protesters know that Hamas would happily torture and kill them because of their homosexuality?’”
The author rejects predictions that such contradictions will cause the coalition to fracture. He cites a 2024 Wall Street Journal article that argued the “Omnicause” was collapsing, then disputes that conclusion.
“In 2024, The Wall Street Journal published ‘The “Omnicause” Is Collapsing’… but such optimism is mere wishful thinking,” Dr. Youssef said. “The evidence shows that, if anything, the Omnicause is growing bigger, more vocal, and more extreme in its views.”
In the book, Dr. Youssef argues that Christians and other Americans should understand the coalition as more than a temporary political alignment. He says its durability rests on common opposition rather than a coherent shared worldview.
“Americans should not assume that internal contradictions will make this alliance disappear on its own,” he said. “Its participants may disagree sharply on fundamental questions, but shared hostility toward Christian truth and American values can keep them marching together.”
