AFA Action releases new report on IVF, selective reduction and surrogacy
TUPELO, Miss. — AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, has released “IVF, ART, and Surrogacy: Moral Guidelines for Policymakers,” a new report exposing the ethical and legal concerns surrounding assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
“Science says life begins at conception. Every pro-lifer affirms this basic truth. Embryos created through IVF and ART are human beings. Pro-life lawmakers have an obligation to rein in the rampant abuses of the IVF industry, which kills more babies than Planned Parenthood,” said Dr. Jameson Taylor, director of the Center for Government Renewal with AFA Action.
The report focuses on three urgent concerns:
- The production, indefinite freezing, destruction and experimental manipulation of “excess” embryos;
- “Selective reduction,” a form of early abortion used to eliminate one or more developing babies; and
- Surrogacy arrangements that exploit women and commodify children.
The report also warns against selecting embryos for non-medical traits such as sex, appearance or perceived intelligence.
AFA Action urges states to ban selective reduction and non-medical genetic selection, strengthen IVF clinic oversight, prohibit taxpayer subsidies and insurance mandates and prevent exploitative surrogacy practices.
“IVF has become a multibillion-dollar industry operating without adequate oversight,” said Aundrea Gomez, the report’s coauthor. “As reproductive technology advances, we must never lose sight of the humanity of every child, regardless of how that child is conceived. Every policy decision should be tethered to one fundamental question: Are we protecting and promoting the dignity of human life?”
