Nine of America’s largest banks accused of debanking and silencing customers for politics
‘No financial institution should have the power to punish Americans for exercising their constitutional freedoms,’ says ‘Financial Issues’ host
PHILADELPHIA — The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) discovered “irrefutable evidence that the nation’s largest banks have denied, debanked and discriminated against customers and lawful businesses,” including discrimination based on political views. Debanking activities at the nine largest banks, including JPMorgan Chase Bank and Bank of America, were investigated to determine whether individuals or organizations were denied banking services or had their services restricted or terminated.
According to Fox Business, “The 47-page OCC report found that in February 2021, under the Biden administration, ‘a payment processor owned by one bank closed the account of a merchant that sold merchandise promoting President Trump and the Make America Great Again (MAGA) brand.’ And two years later, ‘one bank declined to provide financial services to a public education organization due to its partisan leanings — namely, the organization’s political arm’s endorsement of solely Democratic candidates.’”
“The findings of this investigation are disturbing, but unfortunately not surprising,” said “Financial Issues” (FISM) host Mark Minnella. “Nine of America’s largest banks have been found to have policies that allowed political beliefs, religious convictions and lawful business activities to influence who could receive banking services. This is an abuse of financial power that has no place in a nation built on freedom, individual liberty and free enterprise.
“Think about the financial hardship these decisions may have caused families, small businesses and organizations simply because their beliefs did not align with those making the decisions. It would certainly be nice to see some real action taken against these banks, including meaningful penalties and restitution for those who suffered financial harm, rather than another investigation that ends with little more than promises to do better. No financial institution should have the power to punish Americans for exercising their constitutional freedoms.”
