June is Great Outdoors Month! Trail Life USA Leads Boys on Journey to Manhood through Challenge, Adversity, and Outdoor Adventure
June 7, 2021
GREENVILLE, S.C.—The journey from boy to man is fraught with difficulty, challenge, obstacles, and choices. Trail Life USA (TrailLifeUSA.com) equips young men with the physical, mental, and spiritual tools to navigate the journey. The great outdoors is the perfect setting to build character, enjoy adventure, and develop leadership, and now is the perfect time to get outside. Last week, the White House declared June 2021 as Great Outdoors Month.
The lyrics “Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong” written by Trail Life USA’s National Backyard Concert and Campout musical guests,For King and Country describe perfectly the adventure of a boy learning to walk worthy and become a godly man.
“We’re leading boys on an adventure to maturity,” said Mark Hancock, CEO of Trail Life USA. “God created the outdoors to be the perfect path to manhood. The outdoors are where young men commune with God in a way unlike any other. We train boys to lead with integrity, honor God, and serve others – all skills and values they learn best in Creation.”
Trail Life believes in boys and knows that masculinity is not toxic. The program gives men the opportunity to band together to apply outdoor adventure as a tool to train generations of courageous young men who honor God, lead with integrity, and serve others.
“No matter what culture says, we know that boys and girls are different … And boys need a place where it is safe to be a boy!” Hancock declares. “Deliberations about ‘toxic masculinity,’ a blurring of gender lines, fewer and fewer fathers in the home, and the watering down or extinction of programs that train boys to become men have left too many boys frustrated, fearful, and floundering in their struggle to understand what it means to be a man.
“We are living in unprecedented times,” he continues. “More than ever, the world needs strong, godly, bold, courageous men. Boys need mentoring in a uniquely masculine environment where their adventurous, rough-and-tumble nature can thrive and mature. Traditional masculine characteristics like confidence, strength, courage, boldness, and bravery are not toxic conditions. They are not diseases in need of a cure – they are gifts from God.
“God understands the heart of a man. Just look at scripture. Paul met God while hiking on a road to Damascus. Peter and his friends followed Jesus after a fishing expedition. Holding on for dear life, after an all-night wrestling match with God, Jacob asked for a blessing and was given a new identity. There – in the wilderness – bonds are forged, identities are fostered, and boys become young men. There, boys are tested, learn what they are made of, find their place in the group, and discover who they are created to be.”
