Frank Turek in ‘The God Who Speaks’: New Testament Writers Didn’t Create the Resurrection; the Resurrection Created the New Testament

Scholars Come Together to Shine Light on Bible’s Authority in New American Family Association Film

TUPELO, MissThose who challenge the authority of the Bible, perhaps claiming that the human writers of the New Testament “made up” the content, haven’t heard the arguments of apologist and best-selling author Frank Turek.

Turek is one of the contributing biblical scholars featured in the new American Family Studios feature-length film The God Who Speaks. A division of the American Family Association (AFA), American Family Studios explores the truth and authority of the Bible in this powerful 90-minute documentary. Available now on DVD and digital rental, the movie features some of the world’s most respected defenders of the Christian faith.

“You need God specifically and in propositional language telling us certain facts about reality, including Himself,” Turek says in the film. “You can get some of those facts from nature, but you can’t get all of them. You can’t get that God is Triune, you can’t get the plan of salvation from the stars. You can only get it from special revelation, so if we are going to be saved and sanctified, we need the Scriptures.

“When you think about where the New Testament came from, it came out of Judaism,” Turek continued. “Why would these Jewish believers, who thought they were God’s chosen people, invent a resurrected Jesus? What motivation would they have for that? It makes no sense at all. The New Testament writers did not invent or create the resurrection. The resurrection created the New Testament writers. There would be no New Testament unless there was a resurrection.”

M.D. Perkins, the film’s director, says the film doesn’t deal directly with the arguments for God’s existence. Great resources by Turek through CrossExamined.org and others already do that, he said. But the movie does address the questions about the knowability of God.

“If God is transcendent, eternal and bigger than even our highest thoughts of Him, can we legitimately claim to know Him at all?” Perkins said. “It’s false humility to think that God cannot be known at all because He’s transcendent. First of all, the whole notion of a transcendent Creator comes out of the Scriptures themselves. Furthermore, the existence of the Scriptures—if they are true—points out that God desires to be known. Even the existence of language testifies to that desire to communicate meaning and intention. Where does language come from and what makes it essential for human life? The Bible’s account of God as Creator gives a more consistent and, dare I say, reasonable answer to that question than naturalism ever could.”

Dr. Frank Turek is a dynamic speaker and award-winning author or co-author of four books: “Stealing from God: Why Atheists Need God to Make their Case,” “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist,” “Correct, Not Politically Correct” and “Legislating Morality.” As president of CrossExamined.org, Turek presents powerful and entertaining evidence for Christianity at churches, high schools and at secular college campuses that often begin hostile to his message. He has also debated several prominent atheists. Turek’s hourlong TV program, “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist,” is broadcast weekly on NRBTV, and his radio program, “CrossExamined with Frank Turek” airs on 186 stations Saturday mornings.

He is a widely featured guest in the media as a leading apologetics expert and cultural commentator, and has appeared on hundreds of radio programs and many top TV programs including. He also writes a column for Townhall.com and several other sites. A former aviator in the U.S. Navy, Turek has a master’s degree from the George Washington University and a doctorate from Southern Evangelical Seminary. He and his wife, Stephanie, have three grown sons.

Since its debut, “The God Who Speaks” has enabled thousands of Christians to better defend their faith, talk to skeptics about the truth of the Bible and rest assured in the authority of God’s Word. “The God Who Speaks,” also produced by Jeff Chamblee, was recently named Best Documentary at the Christian Worldview Film Festival.
