iVoterGuide’s Detailed Research Reveals Dramatically Different Candidate Value Systems in< Iowa’s 1st Congressional District

After iVoterGuide’s 30,000 Hours of Analysis into 7,500+ Candidates This Year, Comprehensive Research on Behalf of All Americans Shows Stark Differences in Candidates’ Beliefs and Backgrounds

October 28, 2020

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — While millions of Americans have voted already—either at polling sites or by mail—millions more are in need of helpful, telling information about the candidates running in key congressional districts this fall. It’s why these voters must review iVoterGuide’s comprehensive insights into the race in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, as the two candidates hold vastly different beliefs and views.

“As the rhetoric heats up in the last days before the election, iVoterGuide’s data provides voters a clear picture of the political agendas of the candidates in the race for Iowa CD-1, cutting through the campaign ads with in-depth research on what Ashley Hinson, Abby Finkenauer, and thousands of other candidates have done to earn this authority over our lives,” says iVoterGuide president Debbie Wuthnow.

The candidates battling for a seat in Iowa’s CD-1 are diametrically opposed in terms of their worldviews and perspectives on the role of government, particularly when it comes to valuing and protecting human life at all stages. Conservative Ashley Hinson (R), a state representative from Marion, has extremely high “scorecard” ratings as a conservative from two key organizations—the National Federation of Independent Business IA and the American Conservative Union IA. Hinson is endorsed by President Donald Trump, the Citizens United Political Victory Fund, the National Rifle Association, the Tea Party Express, Winning for Women, and more. Contributors to Hinson’s campaign include Bernie Marcus, the Iowa PAC for Life, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Republican Women’s Organizations, and many others.

By contrast, liberal incumbent Abby Finkenauer (D), who is seeking a second House term, is scored as “very liberal” by such organizations as the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood. Finkenauer is endorsed by former President Barack Obama, Emily’s List, Feminist Majority, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and the Women’s Political Action Fund. She’s received contributions from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Committee for a Democratic Future, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), NARAL, National Organization for Women (NOW), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

The 2020 Iowa iVoterGuide provides Iowans with these revealing insights and much more, including website and social media links, and responses (or non-responses) to the iVoterGuide survey.

While neither Hinson nor Finkenauer responded to specific survey questions posed by iVoterGuide, it’s clear from iVoterGuide research that this heated race in Iowa’s District 1 is very much a proxy battle between Trump’s policies and a return to—and a radical expansion of—many Obama-era policies.

“As Iowans head to vote early in person, we at iVoterGuide encourage all voters to take a close look at the extensive candidate information on iVoterGuide.com, especially data on the candidates for Iowa’s Congressional District 1,” says Wuthnow.

Importantly, the “who’s who” list of endorsers reveals a dramatic contrast. Select donation data from high-profile individuals and entities are always key indicators of potential influence or control over the candidates, as well as likely legislative leanings, should the candidate be successful in the election.

“Voters are in the midst of the most important election of our lifetime,” says Wuthnow. “iVoterGuide shows how candidates can be expected to use their power.” She adds, “What the candidates say is one thing—what they actually do is another. iVoterGuide looks not only at the candidates’ words, but also at how they have used power entrusted to them by the citizens.”

iVoterGuide has invested 30,000 hours of research into comprehensive data, candidate positions, donations, endorsements, background, and more to help Americans make the most informed decisions possible at the polls. iVoterGuide has also completed voter guides for all 50 states. iVoterGuide delivers facts to Americans about candidates seeking election—and the turnout for Iowa’s District 1 clash may significantly impact other down-ballot races.
