‘The Return of the Gods’ hit New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Publishers Weekly bestsellers lists for five weeks in a row

NEW YORK — Could ancient entities known as the “gods” have returned to human society? Are there dark forces that lie behind the changes now transforming American and western culture, including the advances of high technology, the modern computer, and virtual reality? What can today’s Christians do to combat these dark entities?
“The Return of the Gods” is the latest bestseller from notable author Jonathan Cahn, who outlines America’s turning away from God and identifies the dark entities that are at work at this very moment to transform the nation and Western civilization. Since the book’s release, “The Return of the Gods” hit No. 2 on the New York Times Bestsellers List — Cahn’s highest ranking ever — as well as No. 2 in the Hardcover Frontlist Nonfiction category on the Publishers Weekly bestsellers list, and No. 2 in nonfiction combined on the Wall Street Journal bestsellers list.
In “The Return of the Gods,” Cahn explains that just as the people of Israel once turned from God and worshipped idols, so too are the American people.
“A god or idol is that which one ultimately worships, serves, and lives for,” writes Cahn. “It is that which one most focuses and dwells on, and from which one takes the greatest joy. It is that which one most reveres and is led, moved, and driven by. It is one’s ultimate reality and the purpose of one’s life. If one turns from God, there will always be another, a god or an idol.
“To an America devoid of God, the pursuit of money and success became an unbridled spirit that possessed millions,” Cahn explains. “This pursuit of pleasure led to a multitude of addictions and self-destruction.”
One such addiction, according to Cahn, is to technology. Cahn points out that when the apostle Paul speaks of pagan idolatry, he uses the Greek word “techne,” from which modern English get the word “technology.” The Scriptures reveal that when a civilization turns away from God, it will end up serving the works of its hands — in other words, its own technology. So as America and the West turned away from God, the people become enslaved by its’ own technology. Cahn acknowledges the troubling fact that each generation has found it harder and harder to break free of the spell.
“In the pagan world, it was not only the god who was worshipped, but the idol itself,” he writes. “The idol and the god were one. Image became reality; reality became image. As America undergoes this paganization, more and more people are living their lives in a world of fabricated virtual reality. American and modern culture has now saturated with a flood of images and sounds that signify nothing — a hymn to the idol.”
Rather than worship modern technological idols, what can Christians do to combat the onslaught of idolatry?
“The only way to live is by the power of God,” writes Cahn. “It is only by His power that one can stand against the gods. It is only by His love that one can overcome all hatred. Only by His grace can one overcome all sin. Only by His hand can one break the chains of all bondage. And only by His light can one overcome the darkness of the age. In days of darkness the light must not waver or weaken but must grow stronger. And if the dark grows darker still, then the light must shine all the more brightly into it. And those who will not give up will, in the end, prevail.”
“The Return of the Gods” promises to take readers on a fascinating, unforgettable, and mind-blowing journey that will leave them stunned and with the ability to see the world as they never have before.
With the release of “The Harbinger II: The Return” in September 2020, multitudes of new fans have embraced Jonathan Cahn’s compelling messages and prophecies, in addition to the millions that are already heeding the warnings and prophecies outlined in his previous books over the past decade.
The author has made multiple media appearances, including on CBN’s “700 Club,” TBN’s “Praise,” and “Family Talk” with Dr. James Dobson.
Cahn’s first book, “The Harbinger,” became an instant New York Times bestseller when it was published in 2012. His next four books were also New York Times bestsellers: “The Mystery of the Shemitah,” “The Book of Mysteries,” “The Paradigm,” and “The Oracle.” Along with Billy Graham, Cahn was named one of the top 40 spiritual leaders of the past 40 years who has radically impacted the world.
Called the prophetic voice of this generation, Cahn has spoken on Capitol Hill, at the United Nations, and to millions around the world.
