Opportunity, stewardship and choices: How Health Care Sharing Ministry membership makes baseball possible for people with disabilities

Katy Talento: ‘Thousands in The Miracle League would have missed out if the Davises had not found a Health Care Sharing Ministry’

WASHINGTON D.C. — Most people want freedom of choice for their family’s health care needs. They want transparency in pricing for medical goods and services because they have always wanted the best price for their families. For many, health insurance, regardless of where it is purchased, is now just too expensive. Many also want to make a bigger impact on a wider community, and find that Health Care Sharing Ministries can make it happen.

“Health insurance is simply not a good path for many who have deep religious convictions,” said Katy Talento, executive director of Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries (The Alliance, ahcsm.org). “This is especially true for those who sense a higher calling on their lives, and who take their stewardship obligation when it comes to their family’s financial resources in this time of government-induced devaluation of the dollar. There are thousands of examples of how relying on a Health Care Sharing Ministry offers extraordinary opportunity to steward their resources in a way that positively affects the wider community.”

The Davis family is just one example. The family has received significant support from their Health Care Sharing Ministry after their son was in a terrible bicycle accident that could have killed him. Ministry members came through with prayer and financial support, and the young man is now doing well. Husband Brian is a landscape contractor, who found health insurance costs a huge challenge for his small businesses, but the Health Care Sharing Ministry was affordable and responsive to the Davises’ needs, so the choice was easy.

However, it’s through wife Stephanie that the Davises’ decision for a Health Care Sharing Ministry makes a national impact. Stephanie is the face of The Miracle League, which serves about 50,000 children and some adults in 320 local Miracle Leagues in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The league is dedicated to empowering children with disabilities to play baseball “no matter their ability.” Because her family was able to find a family-friendly option for health care costs, Stephanie was able to focus her full attention on growing this wonderful organization instead of having to stay in a job in order to get insurance coverage. Stephanie has made baseball possible, regardless of each player’s special needs.

When Stephanie joined the league, it was a local organization. She helped grow it into a national organization that builds baseball fields across the country. What The Miracle League means to the athletes with disabilities and their families is almost impossible to overstate. And the importance of a membership in a Health Care Sharing Ministry to Stephanie’s family turned out to be essential to the success of Stephanie and the league.

“How many thousands of baseball players would have missed out if the Davises had not found a Health Care Sharing Ministry? It’s hard to say, but the world would be the poorer without The Miracle League,” Talento said. “The Miracle League is a wonderful example of how Health Care Sharing Ministries make it possible for members not only to be excellent stewards of their resources, but to make the biggest possible difference in the lives of others. For families with ambitions for ministry of any kind, here or overseas, Health Care Sharing Ministries just make sense.”

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries is a 501(c)(6) trade organization representing the common interests of Health Care Sharing Ministry organizations which are facilitating the sharing of health care needs (financial, emotional, and spiritual) by individuals and families, and their participants.
