Southern Evangelical Seminary President Dr. Richard Land: “Why Trump’s Advisory 1776 Commission Is So Important”

February 3, 2021

CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Many attempts are being made to describe and evaluate former President Trump’s legacy now that his presidential term has ended.

“I believe one of the most important parts of President Trump’s legacy will prove to be his establishment of the ‘President’s Advisory 1776 Commission’ last year to explain to a new generation of Americans the unique history and principles that led to our nation’s founding in 1776 and the ongoing attempts since then to form  an ever more perfect Union,’” said Dr. Richard Land, president of Southern Evangelical Seminary (SES, www.ses.edu).

“Even though President Biden decommissioned the project on his first day in office and scrubbed the report from the White House website, it is still available on the Hillsdale College website: info.hillsdale.edu/1776-commission.

“The left-wing progressives in this country and in the federal government seem bound and determined to tar all conservative expressions of American patriotism with the broad and toxic brush of ‘Christian Nationalism.’

“The 1776 Advisory Commission Report provides an essential and important corrective to that false and dangerous narrative. A crucial distinction needs to be made between certain very visible, radical Christian Nationalist groups tinged with racism and xenophobia and genuine American patriotism that understands the unique and idealistic nature of the founding documents produced by the American Revolution in the 18th century.

“As the 1776 Commission Report explains, America is a unique country in that it was not birthed out of ethnicity or soil, but allegiance to certain bedrock ideals asserted from the beginning to be true for ‘all men’ at all times—thus universal. Ever since it has inspired additional groups of people to claim for themselves what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. correctly called that ‘promissory note’.

“American patriotism asserts the right of people of any ethnicity to embrace for themselves that uniquely ‘American’ birthright when they pledge allegiance to those founding truths of ‘equality and liberty as endowed by their Creator’.

“In a very real sense, anyone can thus claim to be an ‘American’ in a way no one outside British, German, or Italian culture could claim to be British, German, or Italian who did not share the national heritage of those respective nations.

“The American patriotism explained and championed in the 1776 Advisory Commission report is also a mortal threat to the New York Times nefarious and fanciful ‘1619 Project’, which purports to show

that America was really founded in 1619, when some African slaves were brought ashore in British North America.

“The 1619 Project is revisionist historical fiction driven by Marxist cultural theory and political ideology attempting to show that America was an evil and racist society from the beginning. Even the Pilgrims did not begin to arrive until a year later with their ‘City on a Hill’ mission to ‘light the way for the Old World’.

“The 1776 Commission Report shreds the 1619 Project for the dangerous historical fantasy that it is. It is dangerous because it undermines our unity as Americans of differing ethnicities and perpetuates racial and ethnic divisions in perpetuity.

“The 1776 Commission report is a great document, summarizing the amazing history of the noble American experiment better than any document that I have read of similar size (41 pages), and I have read literally tens of thousands of pages over the last half century on precisely this subject.

“The bottom line is this: read the report. Download it. Share it. Recommend it. Do everything you can to wallpaper the country with this critical report. Put the words of this report in your heart, teach it to your children and grandchildren. Talk of this report when you are sitting in your house, and walking about town, and when you lie down and when you rise up and write these truths on the walls of your home and on yours gates.

“As our greatest president, Abraham Lincoln, reminded his fellow citizens in his State of the Union address in 1862, during the white-hot crucible of the Civil War, ‘In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free … We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth … The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just— a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless.’”

SES offers the 15-hour Certificate in Philosophy, Politics, & Economics (PPE). The PPE can also be used as a concentration within most master’s degrees (excluding M.A.R.).We believe that one must minister to the present generation according to its needs, and to do so with truth and power our students need training in the ethical, political, and economic implications of the unchanging Faith “once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). This combination of PPE training and classical seminary education can be a potent one in combating the new heresies and false doctrines rooted in a secularist, progressivist worldview.
