‘I Thank God for a School Like SES That Is Willing to Do Battle in the Culture and Take a Stand’
June 1, 2021
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Parents today are beginning to push back against what they see as a dangerous and even toxic “woke ideology” that is infiltrating many of America’s schools—and now parents at a private Catholic school in Chicago are raising grave concerns that the “wokeness” taught to their children within a “swiftly escalating political ideology” directly contradicts Catholic Church teachings and beliefs.
Dr. Brian Huffling, Director of the Ph.D. Program and Associate Professor of Philosophy and Theology at Southern Evangelical Seminary (SES, www.ses.edu), commented on the crisis from a biblical perspective.
“Wokeness is an increasing problem in general and in education in particular,” said Dr. Huffling. “The problem is not just in secular schools, but also in Christian schools, at all levels. It is an ideology driven by feelings, fear, and falsity.”
Many parents at Loyola Academy, “a tony Catholic prep school” near Chicago, are not happy at all with what’s going on. Noelle Mering, a scholar with the Ethics and Public Policy Center, outlined in a recent op-ed in National Catholic Register that the “woke toxicity” of critical race theory is assaulting the Catholic Church’s teachings, as it promotes a “rejection of the person,” “a rejection of reason,” and a “rejection of reverence.” Not only were “high-paid diversity consultants” brought in to “train” faculty and students, but the “students were racially segregated for school assignments on privilege. A working-class student was bewildered to learn that because of his skin color he is an oppressor to his peers, some of whom live in multi-million-dollar homes,” Mering reported.
One concerned mother, Mering noted, told her that a “handful of people” are “driving this and not allowing moderating voices … This is not a racist institution. Our families have always stepped in and stepped up to make sure everyone feels included and is looked after.”
Mering also informed The Christian Post in an interview that some parents have become increasingly outraged at what their children are being taught at Loyola Academy, and they have created a website to expose the “recent aggressive adoption of an intolerant identity curriculum.”
Dr. Huffling referenced, “From Georgia’s voting laws to transgender track meets, our culture is telling us to abandon reason and truth, and instead treat people based on how they feel rather than what they are. It is postmodernism run amok. It is hard to understand how our culture has gotten to this stage, such as apologizing for saying ‘ladies and gentlemen,’ since some think such words are offensive to those who are non-binary.
“We are living out Romans 1. The antidote is reason and revelation. That is why I thank God for a school like SES that is willing to do battle in the culture and take a stand against what is not only immoral, but what is irrational.”
Earlier in 2021, SES released a new video marking several inconsistencies with ‘wokeness’ ideology and the importance for Christians to proclaim and defend the true and the good. The video, titled “Are You Woke or Awake?,” has been well received on social media.
Dr. Brian Huffling earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion at SES in 2013. He earned his Master’s in three majors—Apologetics, Philosophy, and Biblical Studies—from SES as well, and holds a Bachelor’s in History from Lee University. Over the course of his career, Dr. Huffling has been involved in various types of ministry, including two American churches as well as two Korean churches (in America). He has served in the Marines and in the Navy and is currently a chaplain in the Air Force reserves at the United States Air Force Academy.
The mission of SES is to train men and women, based on the inerrant and infallible written Word of God, for the evangelization of the world and defense of the historic Christian faith. SES offers the 15-hour Certificate in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.SES believes that one must minister to the present generation according to its needs, and to do so with truth and power our students need training in the ethical, political, and economic implications of the unchanging Faith “once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). The PPE can also be used as a concentration within most master’s degrees (excluding Master of Arts in Religion). The combination of PPE training and classical seminary education can be a potent one in combating the new heresies and false doctrines rooted in a secularist, progressivist worldview.
