Why People Take Issue with Symbols and Statues
Dr. Alex McFarland: Religion and Culture Expert Says Convictions Do Not Lie in Statues and Symbols, but in the Bible’s Never-Wavering Truths
CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Yesterday afternoon, workers in Charlottesville, Virginia, covered two Confederate statues in black fabric as the city mourned the death of a woman who was killed at a violent rally earlier this month.
Fox News reported that the action came after the city council voted Tuesday to “shroud the statues of Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson in fabric to represent the mourning of Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman killed when a car rammed into a group of people protesting a white nationalist rally in the Virginia city.”
Religion and culture expert, author and national radio host Dr. Alex McFarland (www.AlexMcFarland.com) has issued several public comments since the protests condemning racism in all its forms:
“Racism in any form should be condemned,” he said. “And with everything we can muster, we would condemn the godless white supremacism seen in Charlottesville. Regardless of your ethnicity, America is about one race: the human race. The Christian worldview that America was founded on says all people have value, worth, and are deserving of respect because they are made in God’s image. White supremacists have more in common with ISIS than patriotism.”
Why do many, McFarland asks, put stock in the physical representations of history and attack these symbols rather than attacking what’s at the heart of racism?
“It is understandable that many would take offense to something they see as a reminder of darker times in American history,” he said. “And while covering a symbol in black to mourn a life that was tragically lost may be appropriate, the solution is not to erase history altogether, as many cities are seeking to do. As Christians, our beliefs, convictions and principles do not lie in statues and symbols—even fully in the symbol of the cross—but in the teachings of Jesus and the Bible’s never-wavering truths.”
