With a Growing Population and 470 Languages Spoken, So Much Potential for Gospel in Nigeria

The Tide® Ministry Has Broadcast Gospel Radio Programming in Nigeria for 10 Years

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.—The Tide® (www.thetide.org) global radio ministry has recorded and broadcast Gospel radio programming in Nigeria since 2009. Today, the ministry reaches millions of listeners in 11 languages with the hope of Christ.

But with nearly 500 people groups and more than 470 languages spoken in Nigeria, which is the most populous nation in Africa, the potential for Christ to change lives in Nigeria is tremendous.

Likewise, says The Tide Director Don Shenk, the Census Bureau estimates that the Nigeria population, currently growing at more than 3% per year, could reach 402 million by 2050.

“The sheer number of people in Nigeria—now and in the future—speaking hundreds of dialects demonstrate how much more of the Lord’s work there is to do in Nigeria,” Shenk said. “Extreme poverty is already rampant in Nigeria, causing many families to not have supplies for basic needs. A corrupt government and hard living conditions cause these precious people to yearn for hope. We know that it is an eternal hope only Christ can give.”

Of the millions in Nigeria, one-third live below the poverty line, Shenk added. Therefore, The Tide ministry’s Radios for Nigeria project puts radios in the hands of Nigerian families or provides them to village leaders at no cost. These radio gifts can be made possible through a donation of just $40.

Udofia, a radio listener in Nigeria, knows his life would not be the same without The Tide ministry’s programming.

“If it was not for your Efik radio program, I would not be a Christian now,” Udofia said. “I started listening to the program when I was seeking answers and found them in your ministry and preaching. Your programs make the word come alive as it should. A year ago, I surrendered to Christ. Thank you for your faithfulness to Jesus Christ and His Gospel.”

The Tide ministry currently offers audio programming in 25 heart languages spoken by millions of people in multiple regions of Albania, Bhutan, India, Kosovo, Nepal, Nigeria, Thailand and Zimbabwe, making it possible for multiple people groups to hear the Gospel in the languages they were born to speak.
