Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Cleveland’s Kyle Korver Taking Faith Onto Court for Crucial Game 4 in NBA Finals
Warriors and Cavaliers Stars Carry Biblical Principles and Fellowship of Christian Athletes Values With Them
KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Golden State Warriors are just one win away from another NBA Championship, while the Cleveland Cavaliers face a do-or-die situation in Friday’s crucial Game 4.
Two of these teams’ stars have ties to Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA, www.fca.org), both previously featured in FCA Magazine, where they told their faith stories to both fans and fellow Christians.
Golden State star and two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry has become the face of the league, and legions of fans are now following the Warriors to watch this exciting player hit the hardwood game after game.
“I’m not a guy who’s going to be trying to bash people over the head with the Bible,” Curry said in the May/June 2016 issue of FCA Magazine. “I want people to know when they see me play that something is different, that I play for something different, and whether I’m talking about it [or not], I just hope by the way I carry myself and by the way I play the game, they can see there’s something different about that guy. And they find out what it is and then they know. It’s part of who I am.”
Curry told FCA that his faith is his “driving force.” It’s both the anchor and rudder for his life as he navigates the remarkable, but often perilous journey of being a famous athlete.
“I’ve always been a believer that the Lord has put whatever talent in you, [and] whatever gift He has put in you, He wants you to get the most out of that. He wants you to succeed; He wants you to pursue and work and be passionate about it,” Curry said. “It’s not about getting any of the glory for yourself; it’s all for His [glory]. That’s where you have to keep perspective. Work at it and do all you can so you get the most out of yourself, but do it for His will.”

Likewise, Cleveland Cavaliers newcomer Kyle Korver has also talked to FCA Magazine about his faith walk, specifically in the January/February 2015 issue, where he stated that he has no idea why God has put him in this position in life.
“I ask myself ‘why’ all the time,” Korver said. “I was never a basketball prodigy growing up. I was just the tall, lanky, pigeon-toed gym rat. But I know without a doubt that I’m still playing basketball by the grace of God. I don’t know exactly what His plans are for my life, and I don’t know why He’s given me the opportunities He has, but I’m grateful for them. I’m going to do my best to honor Him with everything that comes from them.”
Wherever he plays, Korver makes his mark in the community. While with the Atlanta Hawks, Korver was honored with the Jason Collier Memorial Trophy for his dedication to community service, and he’s been a two-time finalist for the NBA’s prestigious J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. In a community of opulence, fast cars and big bank accounts, serving others is what helps keep Korver and his family focused on what’s truly important. He and his wife, Juliet, are also active in the Kyle Korver Foundation, which impacts cities across the U.S.
“It’s easy to get caught up in stupid, vain stuff, [like] wearing certain clothes or buying certain cars,” Korver said. “How you spend money and what you invest in—those are big questions. It’s also easy to start thinking you’re more important than you are, but that’s why true community is so important to us.”

As summer kicks off, FCA is entering its 61st Camps season, with more than 700 camps planned in nearly every state across the country and in more than 45 countries around the world that will reach upwards of 100,000 people.
As registrations ramp up, parents of athletes, as well as coaches and entire teams, can find Camps by sport, day or location through FCA’s easy-to-use Camps site. Last summer, 8,788 coaches and athletes made first-time commitments to Christ and 11,256 recommitted their lives to Christ. The 2016 attendance was an increase of more than 10,000 over 2015. FCA’s 2017 Camps theme is “ONE,” based on the Bible verse Philippians 1:27: “… I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News” (NLT).
