In His Latest Book,Dr. Colbert’s Healthy Gut Zone,’ Dr. Colbert Says That Most People Need More Fiber

DALLAS — Arecent study concluded that increasing fiber in one’s diet improves health. The results of this study would not surprise Dr. Don Colbert, who, in his newest book, “Dr. Colbert’s Healthy Gut Zone” (DrColbertBooks), writes that if adults work to restore their gut health with fiber and eat the same gut-friendly foods, it is likely every single person would see improvement.

“That is how powerful the gut is,” Dr. Colbert says. “Once it is restored, it can put the rest of your body back together again. Of the five power tools I recommend for improving your gut health—fiber, probiotics, prebiotics, polyphenols, and resistant starches—fiber is one of the most important and adding more of it into your diet is a good place to start in healing your gut.”

How then do you get enough fiber? Dr. Colbert’s top recommendation for soluble fiber intake is psyllium husk powder. Psyllium is mainly a soluble fiber with some insoluble fiber from the seed husks of the plant Plantago ovata.

According to Dr. Colbert, one teaspoon of psyllium husk powder after breakfast and/or dinner will usually do the trick, as long as the patient is drinking sufficient amounts of water (at least eight cups per day).

Because fiber absorbs water, it increases the volume of your stools and helps move it all quickly through your GI tract. “Your body needs a quick process,” Dr. Colbert says. “Anything longer than the normal three-day cycle has the potential to cause you problems.

“Fiber is often called ‘roughage’ or ‘bulk,’ but it is far more than that. Your body desperately needs sufficient fiber every day, but most people are getting less than half of the fiber they need on a daily basis. Eventually, aim for 25–35 grams a day, and you can’t go wrong. Add that to sufficient water intake, and you will often begin to see the magic of fiber after a week or two.”

Dr. Colbert’s newest book is available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, BAM, ChristianBook, Indiebound and Walmart.
